Well I took a pic with my phone but can't get it to upload. Anyways, I'm at church with the wife this morning, and I cannot freaking believe what I saw in the foyer. They installed a damn kiosk (looks like an ATM you'd see at a gas station) to give your hard earned money to the church at. Really?!!! I'll try to get the pic up later. It's unbelievable. We also have an online portal, an app, automatic debit.....damn.

doesn't surprize me in the least......I'm surprized they don't have a lotto ticket booth where any winners could dedicate their money to the church............ Maybe even a gambling casino.......Wendyshrug.gif

Nah, it's not THAT big of a church. Medium sized I'd say. I finally convinced the wife to stop giving 5K plus a year to em so we could pay off our massive school debt. It's funny, sermon today was on getting out of debt. All I kept thinking was "stop giving 10% of the gross to your pastor and you'll get out a hell of a lot faster". Of course they still want their money.

Its the truth, Sybaris.

Even if we grant Christianity is true (a big stretch, I know). There is no way it makes sense that an almighty God would need your money.

Giving your money doesn't get you brownie points either (I see Buddhists falling into this trap) to give you "merit" or make you special in some way. People who give money to the church or other religious organizations are not better off than those who don't. In fact, they are obviously the poorer for it, at least financially. If it were otherwise, EVERYONE would be tithing, and it would be a hell of a lot more than 10% and the churches/temples, etc. would be full every week.

This crazy kiosk thing just panders to the insanely speeded up lives we are expected to live in the U.S. just to be able to have a friggin roof over our heads and food to eat. No one has time to do anything, and the church has to have volunteers to count the money and they probably can't get them, so the damn ATM does it.

Wow. You can pay your tithes with debit? New low.

Next thing, open a credit line with the church and pay of your future tithing with 30% interest (because you'll reap 30, 60, 100 fold etc..).

I remember one church we went to had a credit/debit machine so people could use their cards. I think they also had it set up to do automatic drafts. *shivers*

The hilarious thing is, there's a button on there where you can give an "anonymous donation".....as if they wouldn't then have your card info and be able to find out who gave. But, its IN THE FOYER WHERE EVERYONE CAN SEE!!!!!! Not exactly anonymous.

Ugh. I don't miss this about church. "Pay off your debts! Pay us!" They should have a sermon on "the borrower is servant to the lender" and encourage everyone to pay off their debts before they tithe. Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and all that....

It totally cracks me up that you're surfing this site while at church!

If you REALLY want to have fun with the pastors and the 'Holier-than-thou' crowd, ask them where it says in the new testament that it is REQUIRED that Christians tithe. If they run to Matthew, Mark or any of the gospels...where Jesus was talking about money...the church did not exist YET. Remember, Hebrews Chapt 9, "The death of the testator"....the end of the law...Tithing is from the law...LOL......wicked.gif

It sends them into a tizzy...then they start going through all kinds of mental gymnastics to try to justify it....and when you simply say..."Book, Chapter, Verse"....they will get red faced and call you an eeeeeeeeeek.....A HERETIC!!!!!........zDuivel7.gif

Back before I left...I brought this up to a bible study group and the head of it, well...I found out he spent a few sleepless nights researching it.....ROFLMAO!!!!..........GONZ9729CustomImage1539775.gif

You beat me to it - the church cannot possibly back up their belief in tithing even with their own book! It is not "scriptural" according to the "New Covenant".

It really all comes down to paying the bills. Once you've got the building, the staff, the utilities, etc, it's a monster that must be fed. So they must find a way to theologically sell the concept.

Many of the churches where we live have ATM's and auto billing - it is a pretty common thing around here. dry.png

You know what I find just amazing? Ex-Christian.net doesn't beg for money like churches do. They do offer a way for members to send in money, but it's like less than 1% of the amount I gave to the church annually. I cringe when any group wants money, but Ex-Christian.net seems to know this is a sore spot for us ex-tithers.

Supporting Ex-Christian.net is waaaaaay cheaper than church, cheaper than a monthly Starbucks, and cheaper and more effective than counseling (at least in my case smile.png ).

Words cannot express how grateful I am for Ex-Christian.net! clap.gif

The church must be doing well. ATM places are charged a fee--that's what I've been told--so, if the church has an ATM, they are making some bucks!

Ok let me clarify. It wasnt an actual ATM it just looked like one. You swipe your card and the church gets your money. Tax free of course.

This is just sad, but not surprising. Churches will do ANYTHING to get your money. I guess they figure you can't use the "I don't have any cash on me for the collection plate" excuse when they've got a machine ready to swipe your plastic.

I've been in churches that had ATM's. They also had holes in the bottom of the tithing buckets, and tithing envelopes that you could write down your credit card info. You know, gotta cover all the bases :)

This thread just reminded me that I payed way more than 10% of my paycheck ever since my HOURS GOT CUT. You want me to give $20 a week? HA, try $10 FUCKERS!

Can't wait till I don't have to work here and not have giving my hard-earned money to the church be mandatory...

I'm guessing the ATM is so people won't keep taking their share out of the offerings basket. Now the church does it for you!

Wow I actually predicted this about 4 years ago!

I remember watching something on TV about how megachurches hire MBA's and business consultants to map out their "business model" to maximize "revenues" (i.e. tithes), and I made a flip comment to someone about how soon they'll start direct debit to your checking account, and install a tithing kiosk in the lobby. So I can't say I am surprised!
