As far as the bi-lingual requirement SPECIFICALLY correlated to illegal immigrants, all I can say is I live here and shop here and I KNOW that wherever I have been there are illegals shopping here that DO NOT speak English. The locals (who are hispanic, by the way) do NOT like the illegals coming in here and having to cater to them. See my post above about the bank manager.

Sounds like a good idea but I would be having to sue the entire Rio Grande Valley and every company down here. Don't think that's possible. I met a hispanic woman here, that was born and raised here. Her parents were Mexican. She never learned Spanish. In fact, Spanish was discouraged here for a while. She's the manager of a bank here and just found out she will now have to speak, read and write Spanish, FLUENTLY in order to keep her job. Even she was saying, "This is America! Why do I ned to learn Spanish?"

 

I can't even afford the Rosetta Stone because I NEED A JOB, and can't get hired because I am NOT BI-LINGUAL.

 

We will be saving every penney we can to move out of here as soon as we can. Do you know of any StateS in the UNITED STATEs OF AMERICAN that are hiring NON-bilingual people??????????????

Let me see if I can put this in perspectvie for you. The town I live in is on the Mexican border. My house is only 9.3 miles from the Mexican border. The people in this town speak English. My neighbors, the clerks at the stores, the banks, etc. My brother is married to a hispanic woman down here. Her 2 children, who are in high school DO NOT speak Spanish. She has lived here her whole life. She does NOT speak Spanish. If everyone in this town speaks English, and we are on the Mexian border, then does it not stand to reason that the stores, offices, etc. would require an employee to be bi-lingual due to all of the illegals coming across the border?

 

There are local newscasts every day about illegals being found, sometimes 30 or more living in a house, illegally.

My cousin's wife posted some shit about learning to speak English or getting the fuck out of America on her facebook page. I usually bite my lip when a family member posts something stupid on FB, but I let her have it with both barrels letting her know that my wife and two of her other relatives all speak English as a 2nd language and all three of them had to struggle against attitudes like hers as they were learning. She didn't have the courage to respond or the character to apologize.

I think it's great that we have multiple languages on things in the US. It helps people who come here and visit or move here. I would love if every country did that so you could visit and not have a huge language barrier. You can't use Google Translate on a menu you have in your hand.

I am not shocked that they are looking for some bi-lingual employees in a border town. I am shocked and PISSED that I am unable to find ANY job that doesn't require me to be bi-lingual. I was erroneously advised that there would be no problem getting a job here as everyone speaks English, which is true.

 

I'm not the only one complaining down here. Many of the Hispanic locals are complaining as well. Border town or not, this is still America. The people crosssing the border, ILLEGALLY, are the cause of all this, which is what chaps my ass. This is somathing new, according to locals. If it had been a requirement years ago, they would have been teaching Spanish in school from Kindergarten up. Many locals who are HISPANIC have never learned Spanish.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the job wouldn't be available in the first place if there weren't Spanish-speaking patrons to support it. If not, there would likely not be a bi lingual requirement. If there wasn't a market for it, employers in the free market would see no need to issue the requirement.

 

People around the world are required to speak multiple languages to accommodate others. In India you need to speak 2-3 languages just to deal with locals in your own little region. In Italy there are dozens of regional dialects and service workers in border towns must be able to speak at least English and French and probably German too. I don't see what moral authority Americans have to stand on as they demand English only is enough to be employable.

 

As for the illegals, they wouldn't be there if the government didn't allow them to be. There has long been a wink-wink, nod-nod approach to migrant workers in the US even as politicians rant about tightening the borders and red necks volunteer time to guard the deserts against the invasive hoards of people just trying to survive in a harsh world.

Wester, you're the kind of person I am extremely jealous of. I only WISH my parents had exposed me to another language when I was younger. It's so difficult to learn a language now without being immersed in the culture where the language is prominent. I took three years of high school Spanish and worked for awhile at our church's health clinic which catered largely to the hispanic community. Yet I am so far from fluent! If I found a good way to learn languages fluently here in America I'd like to be fluent in Spanish, French, Portuguese and Norwegian (is that a language?).

 

Where I live, speaking Spanish makes you more employable, but most certainly isn't a requirement. I DO understand the frustration though with illegals and their language. If I went to another country, such as France, I would be expected to learn how to speak French. This needs to be a requirement of the illegals coming into this country. Either that, or we need to make Spanish a mandatory language in America for even toddlers to learn. When I have children, I will be making sure they are educated in other languages from a young age so they don't have to go through the trouble of learning it after reaching adulthood. Either way Roxie, I entirely agree with you. At the very least, companies where you are should hire you and provide basic Spanish lessons to its employees.
