This is proven over and over on this site. Atheism - the word is so loaded in this country, particularly where I live in the southern U.S., that you are really asking for hostility if you identify yourself this way. It should not be so. You are right on this. I think most folks see atheists as being "in your face" about it, which some are, as are some xtians. Not sure how to combat this.
