Lerk Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 Nothing has really changed about Christmas for me. Having been raised in the Church of Christ, Christmas was always about Santa Claus! (Hey, God didn't command us to celebrate Jesus' birth, he only commanded us to remember his death, and to do that every Sunday!) Anyway, I started off off-topic. Where I should have started: We got a catalog from National Geographic in the mail. My wife spotted a box containing frankensense and myrhh that you use as incense, and said she's like to have that. Later as I looked through the catalog I saw a Bible-lands atlas I thought she would like. We're always turing over to the maps in the back of the Bible (during the Bible classes that I'm still going to) trying to figure out what country is where now. ("Is this Turkey?") So I ordered both. Before wrapping them, I peeked at the book and realized that, hey, this is National Geographic... they're not pretending that the Earth is only 6000 years old! It shows archaeological discoveries in different areas and talks about how long people have lived in those places. I'm actually pretty excited about this because it's something she'll be very interested in, and maybe, just maybe, it'll do something that I feel powerless to do — lead her away from believing in a young Earth. Maybe I'm being naive, but hey, one can hope! A 6000-10000 year old Earth is an idea I gave up on long, long before I had the sense to realize that an old Earth means the Bible is just wrong, so maybe it won't get anywhere, but it's all baby steps until you take the step that matters, the one that wakes you up. Leading her toward the truth with something that will be very interesting to her seems to be a good start, even though I didn't plan it that way.
