Chikirin Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 Apart from Jesus fishes on cars, I don't see much blatant Christianiaty around me. its more or less online, and since i'm not on Facebook, I only see it if I look for it or read the google news articles. The place where I encountered the most Christianity in my face was at the state college I attended. IV, Chi Alpha, the Boston Church of Christ, and the occasional wacko nondenom weirdo preacher in a sandwich board and megaphone.
Burt_Lemur Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 Did you just watch the Presidential Inauguration? Americans just got fed enough "Blatant Christianity" to last awhile! Lemur 1
alpha centauri Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 msipsy, there are also secular havens on the west coast (Washington, Oregon, California). In Texas where I live, religion is almost everywhere. For the most part, I just tune it out.
MissingLink Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 Here in SW VA, christianity is ubiquitous (as is conservatism). I have just recently found a meet-up of secular humanists and atheists, and at my 1st meeting, it was silly how excited I felt to actually see, talk and listen to other atheists! 1
BendyLine Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 msipsy, there are also secular havens on the west coast (Washington, Oregon, California). In Texas where I live, religion is almost everywhere. For the most part, I just tune it out. Native Texan here, and yeah, pretty much. Austin is a little better than the rest of the state. I lived there in my mid 20's (early on in my deconversion) and got in the habit of making Jesus jokes; people generally didn't care. My coworkers at my part time retail job would find tracts while we were cleaning up and we would mock them relentlessly. Good times. Then I moved to Corpus Christi, which is a much more religious area. When I first moved there I had a conversation with somebody who was trying to convince me that the rapture was coming soon, and I thought he was joking. I spent a good five minutes making sarcastic remarks about Christianity and the rapture before I realized he was serious. I'll be headed back to Austin in about a month; I can't get out of this shitty town soon enough.
JadedAtheist Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 Corpus Christi, which is a much more religious area Given the name, I would never had expected that. 1
2bitmanchild Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 I'm in northwest Texas, though I am moving quite soon. There is so much Christianity, it's like the Gideons met and their testes exploded!

Central VA isn't much better...even with VCU.

Central VA isn't much better...even with VCU. SE Va isn't much better either. Maybe in the larger cities like Virginia Beach, but. The nearest atheist group to me meets most frequently in Newport News and VB, which are really far from where I live. I've spent most of my life so far in NC, though, and Christianity has thoroughly permeated that state.
Vigile Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Here in Russia, most people don't even think about religion. Religion is a museum or a good-luck icon you put on the dashboard of your car. I showed my friend a video of Benny Hinn and he laughed his ass off.
nptphotos Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 I’m with Chikirin on this one, and not far from him either. As the NYT Magazine once described Long Islanders “they are the suburbs from hell and they like it that way”. Religions are around, but way under the radar.

My brother lives in Northern VA and he says there is plenty of Christianity, but more of it is mainline, like Episcopalians, etc. Less of it is in your face evangelicalism; also there are plenty of freethinkers. Much more liberal than the rest of the state.

Chikirin Posted January 24, 2013 Author Posted January 24, 2013 So New Jersey is where I should go. Noted. yeah but on the downside we have lots of landfills and steroid-using Guidos.
