alpha centauri Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 I saw this video by Rush on YouTube this morning and wanted to share it. One word of warning -- around the 3 minute mark there's a scene with the big Jesus statue from Brazil followed by a church, but it really doesn't have anything to do with the song or the rest of the video. In fact, all the members of Rush are atheists/agnostics. I found the song and video inspiring, and maybe some of you will, as well. Also, please feel free to share your inspiring music in this thread.
PeopleArePeople Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 I saw this on reddit today. An atheist version of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah". 1
alpha centauri Posted February 4, 2013 Author Posted February 4, 2013 Cool! Thanks for sharing that, PeopleArePeople (did you choose your user name based on the 1980s song by Depeche Mode?). The lyrics are outstanding, and the last two verses especially hit home: "With no confidant it was bottled insideAn "ATHEIST" is one most all would derideHow could I break the news to those that love you?The Confession, The Heartache, the Crying and GriefWas tough to endure, but paled to the reliefOf indescribable freedom! Hallelujah! "I see more beauty, my eyes feel clearThe shame and guilt are replaced by cheer (beer? )I never thought my life could mean so much to me.It's short, and precious, and bittersweetSo I'll fight for truth against deceitTo free those who want to feel the Hallelujah!"
PeopleArePeople Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 I am glad you enjoyed it. Those last two verses got to me as well. Yes, I am a huge Depeche Mode fan. I loved them as a teenager, but I had stopped listening to them the last few years. I chose to fill my mind with "Godly" music. I can now enjoy them once again without any guilt! The lyrics from "People Are People" registered with me as an ex-Christian... So we're different colorsAnd we're different creedsAnd different people have different needsIt's obvious you hate meThough I've done nothing wrongI never even met youSo what could I have doneI can't understandWhat makes a manHate another manHelp me understand
alpha centauri Posted February 4, 2013 Author Posted February 4, 2013 That's a great song -- it was a hit back when I was a teenager. Unfortunately, there are many stupid things that cause a human being to hate another human being, and warped religious views are often at the top of the list.
alpha centauri Posted February 7, 2013 Author Posted February 7, 2013 Here's another, Boston's "Don't Look Back." It's a very inspirational song, and it sums up the incredible feeling of freedom from religion, of turning your back on an angry, threatening -- but thankfully imaginary -- biblegod and realizing that life is what you may it. Here's to you, ex-Christians and other humanists, agnostics, atheists and freethinkers. Seize the day, and don't look back!
alpha centauri Posted February 9, 2013 Author Posted February 9, 2013 In a world filled with people who want to control us, sometimes we just have to say: NO, I'M NOT LIKE THE OTHERS! I'LL NEVER SURRENDER! Here's a tune by a band that knew how to convery those sentiments in a very powerful way:
SilentLoner Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 I saw this on reddit today. An atheist version of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah". That's really good.
alpha centauri Posted February 14, 2013 Author Posted February 14, 2013 Here's more. Definitely not rock songs, but inspiring nonetheless. 1
alpha centauri Posted February 14, 2013 Author Posted February 14, 2013 Thanks for sharing those Stryper. I share your affinity for Rush. They're definitely one of my favorite bands, as well. I can honestly see classes studying their lyrics and listening to their music in future generations. I really think they are not as recognized or appreciated as they should be.
