NEWsong Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 I like to define myself in words that describe "WHAT I AM" rather than what I am NOT... I don't like the term "UNBELIEVER" because it is NOT that I "don't know enough" to believe but that I KNOW TOO MUCH too be a believer...maybe an OVER believer??? a PAST BELIEVER??? I don't like the term EX christian but I realize that is WHAT I AM...I am NO LONGER a Christian...though I have probably used this the most often recently; I still would rather call myself "A free thinker" or "religiously open". Has anyone adopted any other descriptive terms that "others" will understand/respect and which we do not have to "explain to them"? You know how the saying goes "If I have to explain it to you, you wouldn't understand it". I am SO FAR PAST feeling that I have "to explain myself" and get into any debates, etc. I don't care to be bothered. Has anyone run into a "label" that pushes the preachy christians away??? (that is truly descriptive of you, I do not want to say that I believe in any other religious doctrine just to turn them off) What do YOU call yourself???
Annier Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 When I saw the title of this thread, I thought, this is easy, I am a'pagan-ish pantheist'. Of course, that would raise a few xtianeyebrows, and possibly leading to expectations of an explanation. That's not what you are asking for, is it. Probably,I might use the term 'Freethinker'. I have at times, but I have foundthat that label is often interpreted as 'atheist', which is not a labelI choose. I could use the term 'agnostic' but I think that a xtian may see that as an open window to evangelise. I really don't like labels, but sometimes you do need to find one for the occasion. I really prefer to say that I have my own thoughts and feelings on 'religion' and try and make that the end of the matter.
greylight Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 If I was label my beliefs if someone else wanted to know, atheist or non-religious. I'm okay with the term ex-christian, because it describes an evolution of my beliefs accurately, I just don't go around telling people that I'm an ex-christian.
mymistake Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 In casual settings I might call myself a "non-stamp collector" in honor of the artist who invented the term. 2
Akheia Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 I don't have a problem with "ex-Christian." It perfectly describes, especially to nosy Christians, where I am on the continuum, though in the past it's prompted the Christians in question to spew the usual No True Scotsman and Pascal's Wager horseshit. If I don't feel like I need to place myself on that continuum, I can also go to "heathen," "pagan," "non-Christian," or "secular humanist."
pox Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Depending on how much I want to confront, explain, or even talk about it at all: I'm not religious.I'm a non-theist. I'm a former Christian. I lack belief in gods. I'm an atheist. I'm a musician.
Voice Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Somebody posted a test here that determined what you could call yourself. Anyone remember where that was? You might think about Unitarian. When Xians ask, I'm an ex-christian. Anyone else asks, I'm spiritual. Can't say "a spiritual."
SquareOne Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 If God is the topic of conversation I'm an atheist.
Geezer Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 If your intent is to encourage Christians to leave you alone identifying yourself as a Satanist should probably do the trick. They will notonly leave you alone they will probably run away from you. 1
florduh Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Everybody knows what an atheist is, so that term will suffice for clarity. Christians may or may not run away from an atheist. They WILL run away from a Scientologist.
3DollarBill Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 I am a person. And my worth lies in that alone. 5
alpha centauri Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 I consider myself a freethinker. But when referring to my views on the biblegod, any version of the god of the Abrahamic faiths, Hinduism, Scientology, Mormonism, etc, I'm definitely an atheist
JadedAtheist Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 I think atheist describes my religious view but it is far from the trait that defines me. I am much more than an atheist and atheism has very little to do with my day to day thoughts or runnings in life.
Lilith666 Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Ex-Xian is cool. I still like the way it sounds. But my favorite is "heathen." It was an insult, and then some people decided they liked the label.
NEWsong Posted February 6, 2013 Author Posted February 6, 2013 Has anyone claimed "Pastafarian" or "worshipper of the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM...have you been touched by his noodly appendage???)...I think that could be a LOT of FUN if a christian was told that "with a straight face" and conviction in our voice...lol... I believe that I am more apt to define/describe/label myself in WAYS THAT I AM rather than in ways that I am NOT; though saying "ex" or former christian (POST CHRISTIAN maybe???mmmm) does show "where we are on the subject of Christianity"... Cool replies...keep them coming. Their argument would most likely be that we "have become nothing" since NO LONGER believing as they do and I contend that WE HAVE BECOME MORE and would LOVE a label that describes how we have GONE ON, not just dismiss their faith and belief in the invisible sky friend. FloridaGirl Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 Amy ( middle name, last name) My lack of belief does not define who I am 2
