Galien Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 One of the things that annoys me most about life is that most people seem to think there is only one way to look at an issue. I commented on a news story and just about everyone disagreed with me. Was I not there when the memo was put out about only looking at the world in one way and not being allowed to disagree with the majority? I often find myself disagreeing with the majority, because I don't think things are always simple and I don't believe it is fair to place one template over every similar situation. Drives me around the fucking twist that I am apparently not allowed to think differently. GRRRRR 1
alpha centauri Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 That's because most people are taught to think in terms of black and white, ignoring the shades of grey. Or maybe you're just "quite the contrarian." I think it's kind of a herd mentatlity that most people follow. It's hard for many people to voice viewpoints that conflict with the majority, so they often either go along with the majority opinion or they just keep quiet. That herd mentality can be dangerous though. Congratulations on not being a lemming!
Geezer Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 I agree with both of you. Attaching labels, IMO, is just another form of indoctrination. If a person allows themselves to be labeled then they are expected to think, speak, and behave in ways acceptable to the herd they have aligned themselves with.Freethinking tends to be more of a myth than a reality, and true freethinkers are often viewed as being a little weird or at least not team players.
florduh Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Nothing is ever as simple as it appears or is painted to be. Looking beyond the surface and the sound bytes takes an effort most people would rather not expend. Good for you.
RipVanWinkle Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Also, it can be lonely going against the prevailing view. bll
Guest Babylonian Dream Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 I've been told by Ramen that I'm as far right as BO and Glen Beck, and by people irl that I'm way too hyperliberal. People like fitting neat little boxes. It fits into their indoctrinated world view. Meh.... I'm on my own path I've created with ideas I've thought about and conclusions I've arrived at. We're not a part of the crowd. 1

Keep up the good work. :-)
Galien Posted February 5, 2013 Author Posted February 5, 2013 Thanks guys. I could fucking well scream most days. I know I am outside the fat part of the bell curve on most things but it causes me constant frustration having to deal with people who won't think, or who let others do their thinking for them. I guess I thought wrongly that getting away from christianity would get me away from this kind of thing. Wrong. Doesn't help that I was the victim of this kind of thinking, and it traumatised me so much to see how easily people who had known me for years turned into an angry mob. Not much in life scares me anymore, but this groupthink does. I cannot understand why people don't see how easily they are manipulated by group opinion, or why they don't feel used and controlled by it.

Moderator Margee Posted February 6, 2013 Moderator Posted February 6, 2013 Galien..love the new picture!! Beautiful hon! I think I have mentioned this so many times in the last couple of years....I have no fight left in me. I am so different in my mind and the way I think and always have been like this when I look back over the years. I used to fight for the right to my own opinion....but now, I'm just too tired. Imagine dealing with all those woman for 40 years as a hairdresser. I had to stop fights in my own beauty salon!!! I mostly sit amonst the people and just nod my head now. I really don't have a lot to say anymore if people are close minded, I just leave them alone. Keeps my blood pressure down!! I am a wuss most of the time. I prefer sitting back and watching the human race fighting with all their 'right' opinions. Gives me a good laugh!! It's better for my heart right now at this age!! mind you...every now and again I blow off some steam at someone and it feels good!! I'm just not perfect yet!! Hug girl! 3

I would have been a total disaster as a hairdresser. I would say you want me to do your hair, you don't talk no shit to me. Go away and read this novel and we will discuss it next time you come in I don't want to hear about your bunions, your curtains or your grandchildren's problems. I want you to remember you are an adult with a brain and not an extension of a woman's magazine advice column. Such social graces 1

alpha centauri Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 I remember when I was a kid, I used to think the majority opinion must be the right one. Then, I learned from a teacher that there is such a thing called "the tyranny of the majority." You see it played out countless times in history. Some people seem to have a burning desire to stomp on those who don't agree with them, or to harm and discriminate against those who are just "different."

Some people seem to have a burning desire to stomp on those who don't agree with them, or to harm and discriminate against those who are just "different." Indeed. I resent that is such a huge struggle to be allowed to be different. Makes my blood boil, and I realise when I get into disagreements that is what it usually boils down to. Leave people the fuck alone and let them be who they are instead of browbeating, criticising and hating them into conformity. I LOATHE the idea that there is only one way to live or one way to think.
Adrianime Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 Hi Galien, I suspect I was in on that news story thread. Everybody was also hounding me non-stop for not following along with their way of thinking, desparately trying to convince me that my point of view was invalid and illogical. Although maybe you are talking about a different thread. Unfortunately, I get the impression that a large chunk of people feel they NEED to be right, and get a kick from exerting their "superior" point of view. It can get annoying, I agree. Especially when they just refuse to acknowledge that there are other valid ways of thinking besides their own. It isn't always about "I'm right and you are wrong". Some people can't accept a "this is what I think, and this is what you think" outcome. It gets to be so black and white. It's one thing to not agree with somebody and to discuss why, it's another thing to attack a person's opinion because it is different than yours. But hey, I guess if you are always "right" there is no need to consider anybody elses opinion.

Disagreeing about the later - it doesn't matter. If the opinions involved are actually conclusions based on erroneous facts, you can certainly point to the correct facts. If the opinions do not adjust based on the correct facts, then you are dealing with irrationality, disingenuousness, emotionalism or other dysfunctions. Good luck with that.
mymistake Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 Guys, you are not your ideas. Learn to separate an idea you voice from your value as a person. If you have a controversial idea and you choose to share it with a group what do you think will happen with that controversial idea?
stryper Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 it might make people think. but in challenging what people think, people tend to get upset.
