Who Turns You Off Of Religion More, Ordinary Clay Or Thumbelina?

Recommended Posts

Its pretty strange, but no one influences me in this area.

At least no living person that I have met.  It is only through reading and thinking that I have come to my own conclusions and they have nothing to do with influences by friends, acquaintances or family.

I have always thought since I was a teenager that life is a serious thing, and most people are really not serious in this area.

Sometimes I read the posts by Christians here, but its really just mostly because I can see how far I have come in my thinking from the way I was raised.  I don't feel any need to debate or argue with most of them - its entertainment. Every now and then one of them will come out with some outrageous statement, but mostly I have heard it all before, many times.

I hope one day I will reach your stage of confidence, Deva. I still get a touch of fear when I hear the

Xtian BS. But it doesn't last long. My brain kicks in fairly fast. But these feelings are nevertheless

unpleasant. It is amazing how deep those lies penetrated. bill

It actually scares the piss out of me.. because I realize that there are billions of people who think pretty much the same way... and have the same cognitive dysfunctions... and they can vote and stuff.

Bill, it took me a long time to get this degree of confidence.  I am also isolated from a lot of the Christian influence and that has helped.

I wish for you the same freedom from fear that I now have. I have a lot of fears, mind you, but just not from Christian doctrine.

It is scary. People who think like they do care more than anything about the god or the religion any candidates running for various positions in government believe in or are a part of. It really wouldn't matter if a candidate running for any position was the ideal candidate for the position they were running for and clearly would be the best choice for election, if they believed in the wrong god, the wrong version of their god or didn't attempt to force the religion of those voters upon everyone else, they would not vote for those candidates.

All "single issue" voters piss me off. They have but one agenda and will vote for anyone whose rhetoric includes the right buzz words - "Equality for Clowns" or "A Revolver in Every Pot" or "We Are A Christian Nation" or any other such rot. Effectively governing our complex society requires electing people who are both honest and capable in many areas. I believe that the single issue voters have been electing our leadership for so long, we're now in this sorry shape because of it.

Oh that opens up the worm box so much, I can't even stuff them back in fast enough.  You say they are single issue voters, but I would even challenge THAT.  They are only single issue voters as a function of what they are fed.......both IN church and definitely OUT of church as well.

I'm with you, but if the honest and capable leaders were such,  there might not be as many of the single issue voters.  Freedom and independence come to mind in the same breath.

Not really. Single issue voters have elected incompetents and crooks for decades now. I know of many who will vote for a candidate who has a track record of pure shit and a platform of vomit, but if he also happens to say he's in favor of gun rights, gay rights, right to life or right to choose, or perhaps prayer in schools, well, they won their vote with a single platitude. Politicians know how to play their constituents. I'm not going to vote for a candidate who wants to raise taxes so we can bomb Canada just because he said he's in favor of something I'm passionate about. We stopped looking at the big picture a long time ago. We don't need a Christian president, a black president, a woman president, or a gay rights president. We need a president who is adept at economic issues, foreign policy, and seeks peace over war and profit.

Jesus?

Nah, he'd have to run as a Socialist. It would be impossible to get Jesus elected in these here gun totin' god fearin' United States of Amurka. Republicans do like to invoke his name as a diversionary tactic, though.

Isnt' this the point that certainly if socialism could work it would be optimal?  And isn't that the point of the Bible?  That it doesn't work consistantly due to "sin".  Me thinks this is a no brainer.

Me thinks that almost any system CAN work, but people always screw it up with their special interests and greed. No government or social system can overcome human nature. Benevolence and common sense could be implemented under any system, but somehow they never are. The perfect world exists only in mythological Utopias.
