The Virgin According To The Bible? Good Or Bad?

According to the bible did the virgin Mary know that her child Jesus was going to be crucified/sacrificed when she got pregnant?  Or according to the bible was she shocked when her son was executed like she never saw that coming?  I ask this because it's a very interesting question as far as many Christians consider the Virgin the perfect woman and they worship her (even though her character in the bible is pretty boring after giving birth she does pretty well nothing exciting).  But if she knowingly gave birth to a child doomed to crucifixion wouldn't that make her like the evil stepmother in the story?

Mary was told after the birth that the child would result in her soul being "pierced".

Luke 2:34-35(NIV)

Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed.

And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”

It's pretty vague and I doubt if Mary would have known what it meant.

However, Mary was also told that she was doing a great service to the Lord and was blessed for it.

I find it more interesting that the birth of Jesus made Mary unclean, just as the birth of any other child did to a woman.

Mary had to be purified as a result of giving birth to Jesus.

Well, in two of the gospels there wasn't a birth narrative so nothing really happened.  And in the others she "volunteers" to give birth in the heat of the moment when the angel appears so there's no real consideration for what might happen down the road (I think she's told in one version she's giving birth to a savior...whatever that was supposed to have meant).  So, no, I would say that she wouldn't have be able to envision a crucifixion at this point in time or really any time in the story when she's supposedly able to keep an eye on things (which is extremely vague...we should imagine her at home most all the time).

Well as a RC for over 50 years and not practicing right now, they about made her part of the trinity.  I do not believe there was a virgin birth so no she didn't know her son would be crucified except when he began preaching she knew Rome would not like it.
