rach
I see that they are now casting for the movie of 50 Shades of Grey and I've got just the right guy for the role of Christian. "Christian"' is his name how ironic. Anyways, who better than Bible God himself to really bring out the essence of the character. “[Ana] “You’re a sadist?”“I’m a Dominant.” His eyes are a scorching gray, intense.“What does that mean?” I whisper.“It means I want you to willingly surrender yourself to me, in all things.”I frown at him as I try to assimilate this idea.“Why would I do that?”“To please me,” he whispers as he cocks his head to one side, and I see a ghost of a smile. "i'm fifty shades of fucked up." See, these passages could have come straight out of the holy scripture. "Just willingly surrender yourself, in all things...."

I guess I never thought about it that way. That is awesome. On another note, this movie has already been made. It was called "The Secretary". Thurisaz
I've never read any of those fucking books but from what excerpts I've seen and from what I've heard they are one huge abuse-fest. Yup one could just as well read da wholly babble. I'll never understand what women find in this shit.
ExXex
Hmm, I wonder if they'll have that scene where he takes her tampon out and throws it in the toilet. What sort of psychopath throws used tampons in the toilet unless they're special flushable ones? I reckon that sort of behaviour would get Jesus flipping tables over at least! I'll only watch it if they cast Gilbert Gottfried as Christian. Otherwise I'm also baffled about how popular it is, sure it's smutty but there must be many better written and less creepy smutty books out there who advocate responsible sanitary implement disposal. seeker001
Will I see the movie, no. All it is is glorified Twilight fanfiction with the names changed. I however would watch Ellen read the whole thing.
Lilith666
No offense if you're a fan, but that thing almost made me sick. Christian had Ana sign a contract that pretty much said he owned her for as long as the relationship lasted. She had to stay with him on the weekends, keep in great physical shape, and wear what he bought her. He always stalked her to see where she was and what trouble she was getting in, as if she were his 12-year-old daughter and not an adult who should be expected to take care of herself. I couldn't even make it to the extreme-abuse bit, but I read ahead a little and decided anyone who enjoys putting people in that much pain needs therapy, not glorification. Besides, the writing was juvenile. Hated hated hated hated hated hated it.

I think its bestseller status says something about how sad and pathetic many women are, if they find a person like Christian Grey attractive. No wonder the divorce rate exploded. I think I would rather read the buybull. At least it has some nice poetry.

From what I've heard of 50 Shades of Grey (I've never read it), it sounds like garbage. The worst thing I've heard is that the book paints an incorrect image of what BDSM is, in the minds of people who know nothing about it.

rach
Yeah. Not going to see the film. Couldn't read the book without feeling ill, Christian was such a self-important dick and Ana apparently had no aspirations other than being somebody's sex puppet. I just thought Christian's feeling of needing to have ownership of someone (ew) really reminded me of the scriptures and how God wants to own us. Thurisaz
It's funny isn't it? No matter how shitty or inhumanly barbaric a story is, slap a cheesy happy ending on it and hordes of women will love it. Okay that's kind of sarcastic. I hope you know what I mean. Galien
I would have punched him in the face I only read all three books because I was waiting for some closure on Christian's demons, and some depth regarding the reason for his fancies. The fact that so many women swooned over this shit tells me a lot of chicks are having really unsatisfactory sex.

Was there any depth to it? I read something about his having been abused, but I felt that had been thrown in to give the impression of something weightier than kink so women could feel like they were reading literature. I've never read it, but it was originally Twilight fanfiction called, Masters of the Universe. We processed 50 Shades as a student paper against another student paper (MoTU). According to Turnitin, the similarity index was 89%. There are whole swaths of text wherein just the names were changed from MoTU to 50 Shades. Click on the thumbnail for an example. The red is the text that is the same in both pieces. http://dearauthor.com/features/industry-news/master-of-the-universe-versus-fifty-shades-by-e-l-james-comparison/ I've never read FSoG or Masters of the Universe, but just on ethical reasons alone I encourage you to not give this "author" your money; either track down the original MoTU or get it from your local library if you are curious. Do not support the author on this series. I don't think fan fiction is any less of a literary medium, since fan fiction as we know it today was created as a result of modern copyright laws. There is also nothing wrong with fan fiction authors moving into the professional writing world. However, Ms. James presented FSoG as an original story with significant changes to MoTU. If FSoG was truly a rewrite of MoTU with significant changes, than Ms. James should have nothing to fear leaving the original up for people to judge. No there wasn't - a couple of flashes of what happened to him, but some of these were dealt with in a very judgemental and shallow way, but I guess that was the target audience. The kink really had no depth to it either. Just more pap for the masses, and this lady judged her market well.

How does this compare to the number of women who love the Gor books? If women do enjoy this fantasy and in some cases, the lifestyle then how does it relate to the "rape culture" I've been hearing about?
