antix Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Was at Playa El Tunco El Salvador last thurs - sunday and in the airport, missionaries were going up to the gate to upgrade their seats. The one Xian I keep friends with who has started to go overboard, is now using vacation time and his own money to help out at a church revival (I still have no clue what revival really means). If one more person posts a joel osteen quote on FB, I am going to get pissed
MerryG Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 I hear ya. I was also in Latin America recently and I kid you not, over half of the people on the plane were missionaries (each group wearing tee-shirts identifying the group and sometimes bragging on which individuals were going). And yes, some were flying first class. I got to talking with one of the missionaries in the airport while we were waiting to go through customs and immigration and he told me that at this time of year sometimes virtually 100% of the passengers on flights from the U.S. to that country were missionaries. The most interesting comment came from the head of the family I was staying with: "The missionaries are very proud of themselves, but think how much more good they could do if, instead of spending all that money on airfare, they sent the same amount to the people they say they want to help!" 4
mymistake Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 I hate it when relatives and acquaintances beg for money to support their vacation. Please pay for you own vacation. And stop pretending that your vacation is going to serve gawd.
antix Posted March 23, 2014 Author Posted March 23, 2014 Yup. In El Salvador a dollar still goes along way, or what the flights alone cost, you could make peoples lives better for a yr. There were tons of missionaries on the flight (with their Jesus clothes and t shirts). However, there were some habitat for humanity groups and they actually lived in a more rough environment while down there and did real work.
Ninj Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 I still remember the money I donated to visiting missionaries in my church who was fund-raising for more money to send back to Africa or thereabouts. I still wonder where the money actually went from time to time. And I see Joel Osteen's books in the stores sometimes. His smiling mug strikes me as very creepy.
GraphicsGuy Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Joel Osteen gives me the creeps. Me too. No one is that perfectly polished for the camera ALL the time. Not even anchors or Hollywood celebs. I don't understand why people feel drawn to him and his megachurch.
