CyberRaiden1987 Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 We were having a conversation last night, and the conversation ended up on god. She stated to me that she does not believe that dinosaurs ever existed because "they were not mentioned in the bible". I said that I do believe that dinosaurs existed because there's lots of evidence that dinosaurs existed (such as fossils and "fossil fuels". Why do you think they're called "fossil fuels"? Where do you think they come from???). Hell, the impact site of the meteor that hit 65,000,000+ years ago is still in existence today, located somewhere either in what's known today as Mexico or the region known as Central America. She asked me if I thought she was crazy and I told her that her beliefs were her own and that I would respect them (as absurd as I found them to be). So this woman is willing to believe in a god when there's ZERO evidence of his existence, yet wants to deny the existence of creatures in spite of the PLENTIFUL and ABUNDANT evidence that proves their past existence...?
Adam5 Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 This lady sounds pretty crazy. Sometimes Christians say that dinosaurs existed before the time of Adam and Eve. Which is a cop out but makes more sense that saying you dont believe they existed at all.
BlindersRemoved Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 It doesn't make any sense, does it? You played it right by asking her questions that make her think. That's the strategy I use when talking with my Christian friends. The term "dinosaur" didn't come into existence until the 19th century. I remember there were passages of scripture that referenced "large beasts." I used to tell myself that was referring to dinosaurs. Lol.
mymistake Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 The word for that is "fundamentalism". It's not a mental illness but rather it is a form of ridged thinking and self delusion. Sounds like me 10 years ago. 1
GraphicsGuy Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 That is slightly odd that she would say that they never existed when there is plenty of evidence they did. Most Xians (myself included when I was one) will perform incredible mental-gymnastics to get around the fact that dinosaurs did exist much longer than 7000 years ago, but they will still admit that they existed.
Super Moderator buffettphan Posted March 28, 2014 Super Moderator Posted March 28, 2014 I guess the internet doesn't exist either since it wasn't mentioned in the buybull.
Scottsman Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 I have heard Satan planted all the bones. He sure is a busy beaver.
Super Moderator TheRedneckProfessor Posted March 28, 2014 Super Moderator Posted March 28, 2014 You should tell her to actually read the bible: 15 “Look at Behemoth, which I made along with you and which feeds on grass like an ox.16 What strength it has in its loins, what power in the muscles of its belly!17 Its tail sways like a cedar; the sinews of its thighs are close-knit.18 Its bones are tubes of bronze, its limbs like rods of iron." Job 40:15-18 “Can you pull in Leviathan with a fishhook or tie down its tongue with a rope?2 Can you put a cord through its nose or pierce its jaw with a hook?3 Will it keep begging you for mercy? Will it speak to you with gentle words? 4 Will it make an agreement with you for you to take it as your slave for life?5 Can you make a pet of it like a bird or put it on a leash for the young women in your house?" Job 41:1-5 Most people of her ilk don't even know what's between the covers of the "good book". *Text taken from http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Job%2040-41 2
Fernweh Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 The entire Pacific Northwestern USA does not exist either because it was formed by the Vashon Glacier (also didn't exist) that receded ~10,000 years ago. None of this is possible because the Earth is only 6,000 years old and none of this was mentioned in the bible. 1
Blood Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 I think I would have stopped at, "I don't believe dinosaurs existed." Going further with such a person is like administering medicine to the dead. 3
RipVanWinkle Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 "You should tell her to actually read the bible " RNP Yeah, but that is kind of a cop out. She needs to learn to use her reason as I'm sure we all agree.Years ago my brother told me that the dinosaurs in the museums made out of plastics and there was no such thing as a dinosaur. Years later I learned that many museums do use synthetic materials because they do not want to risk damage to the real thing. Some dishonest apologists used this, I bet, to defraud the faithful. bill

Showing her that dinosaurs actually are in the bible would, I think, be a good way. Unless she says something along the lines of "Leviathon was just a serpent and Behemoth was simply an elephant." If she says something like that, then she's likely beyond hope.
Ellinas Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Presumably she sees science as a sort of conspiracy theory against her god. The interesting part to my mind is how this subject was broached. If she suddenly decided to bring it up, potentially it indicates her own need to reinforce her own beliefs in the face of evidence - in other words, trying to suppress the doubt. In which case, making her think may not be so difficult - though getting her to admit any doubts would be a far more difficult prospect and the attempt probably counter-productive. You've planted the seed, CyberRaiden (to use a vaguely biblical metaphor). Now you can only wait to see if it grows... 1
AlwaysNow Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 What does she think all of those dinosaur fossils are?
kolaida Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 I was pretty fundamentalist but I never got to the point of disbelieving in dinosaurs. They are just everywhere, one of my favorite computer games as a kid was a dinosaur game, you got Jurassic Parks, and all the stuff you learn in school about them. I just couldn't not believe in them. I've never actually met someone who has told me they don't believe in dinosaurs. I mean, I heard about it, but even some of the super conservative stuff I bought still said they at least thought it was likely dinosaurs existed. Good luck with her. I think someone that is that far gone has to come to in their own time.

Stryder Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 I went from trick of Satan, to outside Eden while Adam and Eve frolicked, to walked with humans, to holy shit, they really are old, this is a problem, oh well....and finally, the bible is a lie, fuck I was brainwashed by myself, didn't even grow up a christian. Only deconverted this week, 8yrs of annoying the shit out of people and feeling guilty, acting hypocritical. I truly hate the bible.
