A careful and impartial reading of the bible shows that the Hebrews believed in a flat earth.  They also believed that the circle of the earth was stationary and supported by pillars.  They believed the earth was covered in a sky dome and that the sun revolved around the earth.

We all know for a fact today that the earth is spherical, revolves around its axis and revolves around the sun.  It is noy supported by pillars or covered with a sky dome.  Such ideas are ridiculous.

How can Christians in the 21st century believe a God authored or co-authored such a book?  I guess its just another blind spot in the vision of Christians?

The parts of the Bible we know are untrue were just a metaphor.  Except when the knowledge comes from evolution.  Then the fundies do super denial.

Hi MM, I was one of those liberal Christians saying it was metphor and not to be taken literally.  A problem with this of course was that the gospelers and Paul took the old testament as actual history and they believed in a flat earth too.

The bible says it. I believes it. That settles it. The bible is the literal word of God!!! Well, unless the Xian is backed into a corner with undeniable evidence or logic ... then it's just a parable. haha.

*cue the infamous "circle of the Earth" verse always brought up by morontheists as "proof that of course da wholly babble says Earth's a sphere!!!!"*

*cue skeptics' question "What's the difference again between a circle and a sphere?"*

*cue morontheists' sophisticated comeback "umm... err... LOOK! AN AIRPLANE!"*

I swear to fuckin' god, I just read "inspired" as "insipid."

"Inspired", "Insipid". What's the difference. Maybe the fundamentals interpretation of the bible's language should be a form of Newspeak (:"1984") and referred to as "biblespeak".

You know how some fundamentalists answer the fact that the bible assumes the earth is flat? They interpret certain verses referring to the earth as "circular" to mean that the earth is spherical. According to some biblical historians, however, the word used in Job, for example, for circular in describing the earth meant just that in ancient  Hebrew. The Hebrew language had available for use words which meant spherical, but those words were not used to describe the earth in the bible.   bill

If the earth isn't flat why don't planes ascend higher and higher on long trips dumbasses. Also, water always finds it's own level so it can't be level if the earth isn't flat. Lost a lot of respect for you all now. I'll give you one rotation of the sun round the earth to form a rational response.

Most Christians are blissfully unaware that their holy book is a flat-earth book from cover to cover. Daniel 4:11 and Matthew 4:8 clearly depict a flat earth, and of course there are other verses that do as well. Isaiah 40:22 is frequently used as a proof text by Christian apologists for a spherical earth, but the fact is that it clearly teaches that the earth is flat:

He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in.

You spread a tent out on a flat surface! And for people to look like grasshoppers they would have to be on a flat surface seen from high above (the Sky Kingdom, in this case, which is located just above the solid dome firmament in which the stars are fixed)!

Glory!

Yes! Isaiah 40:22, which actually teaches that the earth is flat! Glory!

Possible christian replies:

  • you took those verses out of context!
  • god gave those people only so much information due to their limited education!
  • those writers were writing poetically, it's meant to be inspirational, not educational!
  • Of course the earth is flat!  Why do you think Aussies have funny accents?  It's due to the blood in their heads!

Hi Jeff, agreed, a circle is a flat two dimensional object.  Quoting from 'Biblical Nonsense' - the Hebrew word for circle is chug, meaning circle. The Hebrew word for sphere, kadur, is not used.  "Historians have long determined that a disc shaped earth was a popular belief" "We even have ancient maps of Babylon and Eygpt containing illustrations of a circular seas surrounding circular land."

Throughout the Bible a consistent picture is portrayed of a flat earth, pillar supported, with solid sky dome.  The obvious conclusion is the multiple authors were all devoid of inspiration and saying that the Bible is "God-breathed" is very silly indeed.

Yes.  The circle of the earth means that Earth is shaped like a round table.  They thought it was a flat surface like a table without corners.

All Right!  I want you "round earthers" to think about this logically!  If the earth was round, how could you keep the people on the bottom from falling off?  Check Mate!

Christians say it is stupid when you ask them if God is all powerful could he make a square circle yet it's within Gods power to make a flat sphere?
