Goodbye Jesus

Physics Bending God Stopped By Technology

Here's a great bible story for this weekend.  I was reminded of these two things from a conversation with a christian.  Yay, god is so good, he is powerful, there's nothing in your life he can't bring out for his glory.  Oh really...

Remember Joshua?  Yeah, the bible's Joshua.  Here's Joshua 10:13-14

13 So the sun stood still,
    and the moon stopped,
till the nation avenged itself on[b] its enemies,

as it is written in the Book of Jashar.

The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. 14 There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the Lord listened to a human being. Surely the Lord was fighting for Israel!

Oh my god!  So god was capable of:

  • stopping the earth's orbit and rotation
  • excluding all matter on earth from being affected by the laws of physics (what happens if you stop both the rotation and the revolution of earth?  What happens to the rest of the planetary bodies and satellites?  They're all affected by each others' gravity fields ordinarily.)

Damn, ok god, if you say so.

But wait a minute...  I remember another Israelite campaign where god was again with them.  Judges 1:19 (yeah, we all know this one)

19 And the Lord was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

Physics bending deity didn't pull another cheat code to win the battle for Israel?  He was defeated by simple metal horse drawn technology?  As Dr. Banner would say: "puny god."

Maybe when the sun stood still, it was just a giant flashlight on Yahweh's mother ship up above the planet's surface, but maybe Yahweh's energy guns weren't powerful enough to shoot through iron, so that's why he got his ass kicked by the inhabitants of the valley with their bad ass chariots.

Even the very bible proves god is either incompetent or evil.  The very word of god, the bible, documents that god was with the ancient Hebrews in both instances.  It's flatly stated there.  Why then did he let Joshua go on defeating the attacking 5 kings (Hebron, Jerusalem, etc.)?  Why did he let the inhabitants of the valley prevail against the people he was next with?

But Roz!  Maybe those men of Judah had an Achan!  The man who hid some booty in his tent so Israel suffered a defeat at Ai.

Well that raises even more questions.  Instead of informing the Israelite leaders, god led them to believe he was with them (not saying anything when you know you were withdrawing your 'hand of protection' away is still deceit).  Instead of having this plot uncovered early on without any casualties, god allowed Israel to be defeated, ensuring that there were some collateral damage in the form of dead Israelite and Ai'ite soldiers.

Those soldiers had nothing to do with Achan's booty hording.  But they were allowed by god to be killed regardless.  So ok, maybe there was some Achan with the tribe of Judah so god couldn't protect them, but by allowing the subsequent deaths to happen the point still stands.  He's either inept or evil.

Anyways, if any christians want to defend this, feel free.

As I've said before, poor fiction is poor fiction.  Granted, that is a simple explanation, but simple explanations are often complete explanations.

No, no, sdelsolray.  Wololo has already explained this.  When god, who exists outside of the universe, enters the universe, he always abides by the limitations of the universe (despite breaking the laws of the universe in order to produce miracles).  Since science has demonstrated repeatedly that the sun does not move and that the earth revolves around the sun, god was perfectly capable of making the sun stand still (since it already does) without breaking the limitations of the universe.  If you read more Plato, you'd understand these things.  wink.png

This is the same God who apparently, according to literalists, before the great flood made it rain from underground and had a radiation filter in the atmosphere to slow down ageing allowing people to live to 10 times our average age.

Well, if Wololo is stevebennett, he's done a very good job at curbing his need to control things and his incessant narcissism.  Some of the "arguments" are similar, particularly the part about how the arguments will be forthcoming, just wait and see, please follow me down my favorite rabbit hole, it will all become clear as a bell, you'll see, I promise.

He claims he's never heard of stevebennett and doesn't know who he is (which I would do if I were stevebennett in disguise) but I agree, the similarities are striking.

Why do you think that every new user that seems similar to Steve Bennett is actually Steve Bennett pretending to be someone else? Surely there are other people that think and behave like he does.

It's not that anyone necessarily thinks that all Steve-like individuals are actually Steve in disguise; it's more that Steve earned a reputation for nefariously disguising himself in order to prolong his trollish ways, which he did on a number of occasions.  I don't, therefore, think a little light-duty suspicion is uncalled-for.

Okay, that makes sense.
