FreeThinkerNZ Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 My mother said she doesn't believe in dinosaurs. WTF? Where does this come from?
Thurisaz Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 Doesn't believe at all? Well that's new... "don't believe they're Millions and Millions of Years old", okay we've all heard that shit, but total disbelief? DAFUQ?
FreeThinkerNZ Posted May 11, 2014 Author Posted May 11, 2014 What do YECs believe re dinosaurs and how do they justify it? (I didn't want to probe her on this, lol)
Thurisaz Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 Well I never had to become an expert on YEC bullshit fortunately, as this particular kind of crap ain't too common over here... but from what I have learned two of the "more popular" positions at least are: 1. all scientific dating methods are wrong whenever their results show ages that don't fit into the YECs' few thousands of years (although they often seem to just happen to be correct whenever the results jibe with the YEC fantasies... ) and Of Course the 'saurs lived with Aaaaaadam and Eeeeeeve in the Gaaaaaarden 2. The 'saur fossils aren't really fossils but fakes planted there by Saaataaan to deceive the True Christians I'm not sure which of the two one should consider more absurd and ridiculous...
FreeThinkerNZ Posted May 11, 2014 Author Posted May 11, 2014 I think my Mum probably falls more into the (1) camp because I know she won't have thought or read about it too deeply. She grew up in the 1930s and 40s in NZ, and won't have been exposed to any information about YEC itself, rather just whatever she gleaned from her Brethren upbringing and the occasional sermon. Her pastor probably did a sermon on creationism vs evolution some time and one slide mentioned the words dinosaurs and fossils and she just took it all on board because the pastor said so. My sister, on the other hand, posts Ray Comfort videos on FB. *looks for facepalm emoticon*
Thought2Much Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 Like everything else in Christianity, beliefs about dinosaurs are all over the map. Talk to any Christian about dinosaurs, and you'll get a different answer than five other Christians you talk to, often within the same church. In the last decade or so, Pentecostals have been falling more into lockstep with Ken Ham's brand of creationism. Even though his views have even been modified over the years, they don't realize that, and convince themselves he's always said exactly the same thing.
FreeThinkerNZ Posted May 11, 2014 Author Posted May 11, 2014 I can't get my head around why they wouldn't just believe what scientists say. The scientific explanation is simpler than creationism. I guess they just don't understand it.
Thought2Much Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 Think about it from their perspective: no literal creation means no literal Garden of Eden and no literal Adam and Eve. No literal Adam and Eve means no original sin. No original sin means no need for a savior. No need for a savior means no Jesus, and no Christianity. This is why they cling to creationism. They will do everything possible, regardless of how ridiculous or irrational, to hold onto their need for Jesus. 1
FreeThinkerNZ Posted May 11, 2014 Author Posted May 11, 2014 When I was a xian, I accepted evolution and an old earth, I guess I cherrypicked and did mental gymnastics to make it all fit. "God works in mysterious ways" and all that. 1
Thurisaz Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 Let's also not forget that there is a difference between "simplest explanation" and "simplest explanation that fits the facts". For the former, you can't get simpler than "gawd did it nyah nyah!". But if you want something that actually explains our observations...
Guest Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 I can't get my head around why they wouldn't just believe what scientists say. The scientific explanation is simpler than creationism. I guess they just don't understand it. Because if scientists are right, then there was no garden of Eden. No garden of Eden then no Adam and Eve. If there was no Adam and Eve then there was no fall and no original sin. If there was no original sin then there was no need for jesus and if there is no need for jesus then they all have to go out and get real jobs and work for a living. That's why they don't listen to scientists.
Roz Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 Ask an SDA, a traditional SDA, preferably one from Michigan (we have a lot of very conservative SDAs here). Those animals (dinosaurs) were made by the children of men and satan because Mrs. White said there was amalgamation which 'confused the image of god.' God didn't take those animals in the ark because they were not created by him. Yes. Advanced race of men that dabbled in genetics before the flood. Not joking. Hand on heart.
Ousian Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 I had friends growing up who believed in dragons, partly due to Ken Ham's proselytizing. Once you through logic and reason out the window, anything goes. EDIT: Dragons, not dinosaurs. They believed in actual, fire-breathing dragons.
Super Moderator TheRedneckProfessor Posted May 13, 2014 Super Moderator Posted May 13, 2014 Just for the record, I don't "believe" in dinosaurs either. There is enough evidence for their existence that I can accept it as fact. 1
Moderator TrueFreedom Posted May 13, 2014 Moderator Posted May 13, 2014 I guess there are a few YECs around who believe that scientists pieced dinosaur shapes together from various bones of different animals. Most of them seem to believe that dinosaurs lived with humans and survived on Noah's ark. Check this out: http://debunkingchristianity.blogspot.com/2013/08/an-atheist-visits-creation-museum-in.html

Thurisaz Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 I guess there are a few YECs around who believe that scientists pieced dinosaur shapes together from various bones of different animals. To be fair, there have (of course) been mistakes when scientists first tried to solve the puzzles of those dino skeletons. Then again that's faaaaar from making up shit as you go like the morontheists claim it all happened.
