Miami Dolphins player Don Jones got fined and sentenced to sensitivity training after tweeting that NFL draftee Michael Sam's kissing his boyfriend was "horrible." Jones wrote that he felt that the kiss was inappropriate whether Sam was gay or not.

This is a little ridiculous. What people say on their own time is their business. Furthermore, Sam seems pretty confident about his sexuality and relationship status, since he posted it online. He probably isn't feeling too wounded over Jones's comment.

People overreact about something every week. It's Phil Robertson, or Donald Sterling, or Don Jones, or whoever. And grappling to preserve your team's image under the disguise of concern about minorities is disgusting. But of course, we can't expect anything different.

And the right is using this to spread terror that everyone will be forced to kowtow to the homosexuals. Cal Thomas claimed in response to Jones's censure, "Criticize anything gay people do and you risk ostracism, fines, suspension or loss of your livelihood." http://m.townhall.com/columnists/calthomas/2014/05/15/free-speech-not-so-free-when-discussing-gay-rights-n1838235

Obviously, this isn't about gays or blacks or any sort of minority. It's about big shots (HGTV, the Clippers, the Dolphins) wanting to look good. Social conservatives choose to ignore that and instead seize an opportunity to prove that people's freedom to live how they want is "tearing at the fabric of society," to use one of their favorite phrases.

It's just awful that people have to be responsible for what comes out of their own mouth.

If he had made the tweet as just a private citizen, then I'd agree that people over-reacted.  However, you have to remember that he represents the NFL and is under a contract with them.  The NFL has to be seen as providing a swift and appropriate response, in order to protect their interest.

People are fired for things they say every day, all over the country, for all kinds of reasons.  We wouldn't even be discussing this if these people weren't billionaires and/or celebrities.

As for being fined by the NFL... well the NFL isn't the government.  If they're fining him then that means he signed a contract allowing them to do so when he says stupid shit.

Don't want to get fined for saying stupid shit?  Don't sign contracts explicitly allowing organizations to do that!  woohoo.gif

This ain't rocket surgery.

I don't hear or see many people, who are concerned about "decency", speaking out against the NFL's spectacle of sexual displays regarding the cheerleaders.

The cheerleaders are for the most part simply sex messengers dressed in skimpy outfits and making gyrations that scream "look at my crotch".

Even high school girls are packaged and displayed the same way.

Yet, nobody in the league for moral decency seems too mind.

They did choose a career that they knew would display them in that way. Therefore, cheerleaders are no less responsible than the NFL and its viewers for perpetuating sexism.

Good point.

Making millions of dollars to play football is ridiculous too. lol. It's funny to watch the reactions of these highly public (publicized) organizations when one of their employees does or says something that isn't politically correct. High paid public celebrities are owned by their organization. On the one hand, it's sad that they are punished for their free speech. On the other hand they make stupid amounts of money and could probably live off of it for the rest of their life if they got fired, so I don't really empathize with them.

Again, cheerleaders are under contract.  The same organization that has to be seen as protecting a homosexual's private sexuality is also free to exploit the sexuality of women who voluntarily sign up for it.  It's hypocritical; but it makes money.

If he was kissing his girlfriend would it have been 'inappropriate'?

Here in Australia, this dickhead is in trouble for the same sort of comments about that kiss:

Oh, Jesus. He really said it was unwarranted, and claimed no athlete has ever kissed his wife or girlfriend in the same situation? What a pathetic way to attempt to save face.
