"Lanza points to the structure of the universe itself, and that the laws, forces, and constants of the universe appear to be fine-tuned for life, implying intelligence existed prior to matter. He also claims that space and time are not objects or things, but rather tools of our animal understanding. Lanza says that we carry space and time around with us “like turtles with shells.” meaning that when the shell comes off (space and time), we still exist."

My way of thinking is that if the universe were fine-tuned for life, as Lanza claims, then we should be up to our armpits in life on other worlds. The universe is hostile to life.

Lanza also uses out-dated information in his 'theory' concerning voids in space. The so-called 'voids' were first noticed using the Planck space telescope, images of what appeared to be great voids in space and this bolstered the notion that this was evidence of multiple universes, bubbles in space where universes may be touching, or something of that nature. Further investigation by astronomers has revealed that these bubbles are NOT voids but areas full of distant galaxies (see link below).

Lanza is just one more hopeful cashing in on the 'there is life after death' craze of smarmy books sweeping the country.

Yeah, it's easy to make compelling arguments for God if you mix and match outdated science of decades or centuries ago with arguments among present-day scientists about incomprehensible sophisticated abstractions and theological debates with obscure terminology regarding the workings of invisible entities and their mysterious and unknowable wills and minds and behaviours. These convoluted arguments can easily confuse the best of us, not to mention the less astute who wish for nothing more than high-sounding words and reasons to believe.

Bottom line: none of it matters. We are where we are and we are who we are. The universe might be fine tuned for strawberry daiquiris, we'll never know.
