Published Paper Blames Schizophrenia On Demons

I'm glad someone is keeping an eye on "journals" like this one.

Sad thing is, there are probably fundies in our own countries who routinely question medicine's approach to disorders like schizophrenia in the same way as this idiot.

IS SCHIZOPHRENIA CAUSED by demons? A Turkish researcher seems to think so, and his article on the topic was just published in the Journal of Religion and Health, a scientific journal owned by Springer, a German-based publishing company.

The first two-thirds of M. Kemal Irmak's paper, "Schizophrenia or Possession?", read normally enough. You learn about the devastating symptoms of schizophrenia, current treatment approaches, and the nature of the delusions and hallucinations that schizophrenics experience. And then you arrive at this little doozy:

"One approach to this hallucination problem is to consider the possibility of a demonic world."

The abrupt transition from established science to outlandish woo is positively comical. And once the quackery starts, it doesn't stop. You're first treated to a background on all things demonic (boldness added to emphasize the absurdity):

There's a reason why most scientists don't take some "researchers" seriously. This would be that reason.

It won't stand up to peer review.

That's cruel to anybody that suffers from schizophrenia or to their family members.

Well, Jesus would be able to make the demons go away, right?

Yeah, especially with people like my grandma, who has this illness and are religious. You know what hearing about this shit does to them? For people with poor reality testing abilities, its the equivalent of throwing acid in their eyes mentally and blinding them.

True, it wouldn't stand up to serious peer review.

That said, though, the peer-review process is seriously broken. Probably not broken enough at this point to let a demons article by. But broken and who knows what will be allowed to slip by in the future?
