Exactly. In this country, it is perfectly okay to indoctrinate children with fear-based ancient myths, legends, and lies and it is perfectly okay to threaten them with the morally reprehensible concept of Hell. It's also perfectly acceptable to publicly damn gays to Hell and suggest that they should be stoned to death. It's also perfectly okay to damn atheists to Hell and ignore everything reasonable that they have to say. And, of course, it's perfectly okay to insist that your ridiculous religious myths get "equal time" in the science classroom. It's also perfectly okay, if you are a Republican believer, to vote against your own interests (if you are female or happen to be poor) and to legislate and discriminate against gays, women and the poor.

But, somehow, it's not okay to publicly call religion out for the harmful mythological bullshit that it is and somehow it's not okay to stand up for reason and science. And, of course, somehow, it's not okay to stand up for gay rights since an ancient book written by ignorant ancient goat herders says it's a sin worthy of death.

I make no apologies at all for being an outspoken atheist. I am doing my part to try to make this world a better place, while religious believers are busy hating on entire groups of people and blowing people up by the thousands and flying airplanes into buildings. And, of course, they are busy too damning everybody who doesn't believe the right ancient bullshit in the correct way to eternal torment in a flaming Hell.

I am SO happy to be FREE, and I will continue to share that FREEDOM openly and publicly, and I will continue to call religion exactly what it is -- ANCIENT BULLSHIT THAT HARMS THE ENTIRE WORLD, as well as individual believers. If you think that is extreme, tough shit. I'm out to change the world for the BETTER, and I won't be shut up by people, well-meaning though they may be, who take ancient myths about talking snakes and magic fruit from magic trees seriously... and who call an ancient collection of books full of shocking brutality the "word" of God...

I hear you completely here however,

while I don't believe in any god or religion at all ever and never will short of that god saying it to my face I don't think it is fair to lump all religious believers into the same category as murderous bombers and hatefull assholes. My parents are relgious and they are good people. I don't believe like they do but they have never harmed a living soul. My father spoke out against the wars in his life and refused to kill in them or harm others. He took other types of jobs (by force of course, there was still a draft on) that required him to help when he was in the service. My mother is a healer and works in a hospital.

Neither of them would ever kill or bomb anyone nor would any religious friend of their I have met. The word your are looking for is extremist. Just like most extremis those people are a minority. It is like saying all southerners are racists again dark skinned peoples.

I fully agree with your point about extremists and how those are treating those on the other side. But really man extreme is extreme and both sides will do the same thing. it is only those of us in the middle advocating for non violence and solutions from within (not from external gods) that are on the side of life and humanity. I may not believe in the things my parents say but please don't label simple religious believers who have not had the same chances I have had as bombers or extremists simply because you hate those that hate you.

I know this is your rant but this is also my rant as well.

Fuck extremism just make sure you are not walking the same path.

Preach it, Brother Jeff!

Seriously, I agree with you. And if what you express in your OP is "Aggressive Atheism," then consider me an aggressive atheist. My views definitely are. My sentiments definitely are. I wonder that this may be the only way to get more people to notice the toxicity of religion upon people's lives (especially children) and upon society.

My hope is that one day the Human race will collectively desire, promote, and realize "Ultimate Humanism."

I may not live to see it happen, but I can still hope.

Peace,

Human

I have this same hope and even if I don't live to see it if i can help hasten it in some future time for others I can die knowing I did the best possible in the time I had for others, and it doesn't take a god to make me feel that way or want that.

I love humans because they are me and I am them. God isn't either of those things and as the worst absenty landlord in history needs to get taken over the barrel.

Long live humanity.

Gall, I did not mean to lump all believers with murderers and bombers. I have a lot of very religious relatives who also happen to be good people. I abhor fundamentalism in all of its evil forms and certainly hope not to walk that same path with atheism. I can sound extreme when I am writing passionately and I know that, but believe me, there are atheists out there much more hardcore about it than I am, and I have recently spoken out publicly against THEM! :)

"Aggressive Atheism Is Becoming The New Extremism"

I have heard other atheists say we are becoming no better than extreme fundies but to me there is a difference......we're right. When you have politicians whose platforms, international policies and legislation is rooted in religion that affects the lives of hundreds of millions then the gloves come off.

In simpler terms, what would you do if your kid came home from school and said they learned that 2+2=fish?

Extreme atheism is when the French Revolution deposed the Roman Catholic pope. Extreme atheism is when the Mexican government tried to stamp out the Catholic Church in the 1920s. Extreme atheism is when Lenin and his ideological adherents took Karl Marx way out of context and made atheism state policy. Extreme atheism is when Albania declared itself an atheist state and attempted to wipe out religion altogether. Extreme atheism is North Korea—although I question whether dictator worship qualifies as “atheism.”

Yes, the so-called New Atheism is certainly aggressive about fighting for the right of people to be free from religion and religious oppression, but we aren’t even close to extreme.
