Jesus Is Awesome, God Is Love, And Religion Is Good? Fuck All Of That Shit!

I'm in a pissed off mood right now and posted this glorious rant to Facebook just about half an hour ago or so. It will soon be appearing on my glorious website as well. Here goes:

I see the damage that religious belief does to real people in the real world every single day over on ex-christian.net. I have been an ex-Christian atheist for almost 15 years now and am totally and gloriously free of religious beliefs and fears, and I do what I can to help others who are not as far along the path to freedom and clear god-and-religion-free thinking as I am. Just responded to this today -- the all too common yet totally needless fear of Hell. Someone on the forums posted:

"Can't truly shake of the fear of Hell, it still casts a baneful shadow"

My response:

"I totally understand but you can be free of it and surely will be with time. Hell is a morally reprehensible concept and it's nothing but an evil myth dreamed up centuries ago to control the ignorant masses through fear. It's not any more real than the Borg or Klingons or Snape in the Harry Potter books (I'm about 3/4 of the way through the first book! No spoilers please...). Are you worried about going to the Klingon prison asteroid Rura Penthe? Probably not, right? Because you know it's fictional. Same thing totally applies to the Christian hell and the hells of all other religions. Fictional places and no rational reason to fear going to any of them...

Hope that helps.... Glory!"

I see the seriously negative effects religion has on real people in the real world every day and of course the bigger picture too with religious belief harming and causing suffering in the entire world.

So when I hear about how awesome Jesus is or how wonderful God is (while thousands of children starve to death in places like Africa. I guess God doesn't love them...), pardon me if I'm not too impressed.... especially since this "awesome" Jesus introduced the morally reprehensible concept of Hell to scripture, told us to hate our families to be his true disciples, commanded that his enemies be executed in front of him, and thought it would be a great idea to hack the body parts off that cause us to sin (a religious concept with no demonstrable basis in reality). So pardon me if I'm not too impressed with how "awesome" Jesus is... Take the horrific violence and the barbaric and evil fear-based ancient doctrines out of the Bible, and you'd have a very thin book left indeed...

My 2 cents... if you don't like it, tough shit. Watching people suffer needlessly from very powerful but totally baseless religious fears pisses me off! READ YOUR OWN DAMN HOLY BOOK and see for yourself just how unimpressive your imaginary god and your mythical savior are to rational people who know what that damn book actually says and actually teaches....

End of rant. And again, tough shit if you don't like it. I'm not in a real happy mood at the moment... Grrrr....

I won't name the member here suffering from the fear of hell or the thread that they posted in. If they see this post, they will know who they are, and I sent them a PM I hope will help too.

I have pretty much reached the point of considering religion an absolute tragedy for mankind with no useful purpose whatsoever. Sure, people who are good anyway have been motivated by their religious beliefs to do good in the world, but they would do good in the world anyway because that's a part of who they are as people. Religion is entirely besides the point. Plenty of good people  in the world, including me of course, do what they can every day to make the world a better and safer place for everybody, and we do it totally religion-free. We have no god to please and no devil or hell to fear. On the flip side of that though, plenty of otherwise good people have had their moral compasses warped beyond recognition by religious belief (examples include hating gays and condemning people who believe differently or not at all to eternal torment in hell), and plenty of people who are bad anyway have been made worse by religion. Hitler may be a bad example to bring up for various reasons, but he was a practicing Catholic who believed he was doing the Lord's work. And he was a complete and total racist murderous, genocidal asshole. Islamic terrorists are bad people anyway, but made worse by their barbaric religion and the promise of Paradise if they kill the infidel. Some Christians are bad people anyway. There are assholes in every large group of people. But they are made worse by their religious beliefs and by the excuses to hate others readily available to be found in the Bible. Fred Phelps (good riddance to a shitty excuse for a human being when he died) and his group of hate-filled assholes immediately comes to mind, but so do the Christian assholes who publicly recently suggested that homosexuals should be stoned to death because the Bible says so.

Anyway... my brain is fried at the moment and I'm losing my train of thought... when is the religious madness that has gripped much of this world for thousands of years going to end? And will it ever end, or will we always be stuck with it and the assholes that come with it? I'm doing my part to rid the world of religion, small though the difference I make may be when compared to people with much larger audiences than I have. Many of us here are, but sometimes it seems like an overwhelming and hopeless task... Wendybanghead.gif vent.gif

you sound like you are close to ruin over all this. I know you were in it a long time but don't lose the rest of your potential happiness over your anger at it. You owe it to you to try and recover some of that stuff you missed out on if you can and owe it to yourself to see the world again as it is.

The religious are human like the rest of us even if mislead and delusional.

Religion is a plague no doubt at all. Don't let it consume you.
