Castiel233 Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 The states that wanted to cede away from the Union did so. Given that they wanted to go, did Abe over shoot his authority as POTUS to use force to compel them to stay. Was the war justified to hold the union together given that some states wanted out of the union to form the Confederacy. By what grounds would you say Lincoln had to use the force of the North to rein in the desired independence of the South Also, given that Texas was once a republic in its own right, with its own President and Vice President, does it have a good claim to cede from the union should its citizens so desire it
florduh Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 The argument can be made that Lincoln, in his duty to support the Constitution, had to do whatever it took in order to protect the rights of all citizens. A state may not simply refuse to recognize federal authority when they disagree with it. Then again, a state or confederation of states has as much right to break away from the US as the US had to break away from England. You just need the firepower to back up such a move.
Vigile Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 Whole lotta dead people just so DC could be everyone's boss. I suspect the south would have outlawed slavery anyway -- if maybe a few decades later -- as it was losing its viability as an economic model as I understand it.
