Wertbag Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Reading through the apologetic CARM.org website I noticed a pattern with some of the reasons behind the brutality of the OT. They basically say "That law was created thousands of years ago, it doesn't apply anymore" if the unjust and cruel bible law doesn't match our modern idea of justice. This idea that the bible is out of date was applied to killing children if they rebel against their parents, killing women if they are not a virgin on their wedding day, slavery and several of the suppression of female rights passages. But all this leaves me quite confused, if you can disregard certain sections as no longer relevant then how do you know which parts should be followed? Christians hate gays, but homosexuality is one of the old laws so perhaps that too should be fine now? I guess most Christians aren't burning witches anymore so perhaps that law is also out dated? Reading the de-conversion story from the daughter of the CARM founder (sorry I forget the names) and it seems like this was the big point that broke her away from Christianity. If God is eternally moral and his word is just, then he shouldn't just go along with the humans but would have told them what was right and wrong. So God gives the rules for keeping slaves rather than banning slavery, yet now we don't accept slavery and consider it immoral. So has God's decision to condone slavery changed? If it was okay then why isn't it anymore? Hell, they even justified stoning the old man to death who was collecting sticks on the Sabbath saying that it was fine back then... Can you imagine if our society kept the Sabbath work free now days? "My friend has had a heart attack!", "Sorry the ambulance will only get there tomorrow, today they can't work". So should we be stoning to death all emergency workers?
Sybaris Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Get outta here with that! You're not supposed to think about it so much. Religion requires ignorance to perpetuate.
Super Moderator buffettphan Posted January 8, 2015 Super Moderator Posted January 8, 2015 You have a problem with pretzel-logic? You think and question too much and too logically. No wonder you're an ex-christian.

par4dcourse Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 The problem is nobody bothered to find the bible expiration date. It clearly says "best used by 400 a.d."
Lucy Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 I never really had a delusion that Bible god was moral and just. I just thought he was almighty and might makes right if you happen to be god. We're just supposed to agree with Him. And if you don't agree then just keep it to yourself because you don't want to risk pissing Him off.
Sheerbliss Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 How do you pick and choose what you're going to take literally, what you're going to take figuratively, what you'll chalk up as a product of the time and place, and what you'll put in the we-can't-know-everything bin? It depends on what kind of Christian you are. Fundy: Take it all literally, think about none of it critically, and lobby your congressman to make laws to match the bible. Catholic: Do what you like, confess on Sunday. Does it really matter that the service isn't in Latin anymore? Moderate: Whack the square pegs into round holes: take behavioral cues from normal people and make excuses for everything in the Bible that isn't normal. Liberal: The Bible's a buffet. Pick and choose what suits you.

RedStar Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Even if they think it doesn't apply anymore it still shows that the character of the xian god is horrible. But that doesn't matter, it was thousands of years ago and now he doesn't do that anymore. They'd hve a fit if we said they should worship imprisoned serial killers too since they don't kill people anymore and their attitudes have changed and past ideas don't apply anymore.
