Hey all,

Which songs can you relate to regarding how you feel about/after deconversion? Any genre will do.

Slash -Nothing to Say

Black Sabbath- God is Dead?

The lyrics to both of these songs really hit home with me. There have been times that I cranked it to 11 and sang along as loud as I could.

I spent 25 years as a strict fundy Baptist. I missed out on so much during this time.

Shortly after deconversion when the huge weight of religion's guilt and judgement fell from my shoulders I heard Steve Winwood's Back in the High Life and it really moved me.

I'll be back in the high life again
All the doors I closed one time will open up again
I'll be back in the high life again
All the eyes that watched me once will smile and take me in
And I'll drink and dance with one hand free
Let the world back into me
And on I'll be a sight to see
Back in the high life again

Awesome. I love getting to know new music. :D

One of mine: yesterday I listened to "Dishes" by Pulp and I nearly cried. It's a "return to sanity" song I think.

"I'd like to make this water wine,

But that's impossible

I've got to get these dishes dry

And I'm not worried that I will never touch the stars

'Cause stars belong up in heaven, and the Earth is where we are

And aren't you happy just to be alive?

Anything's possible, and you've got no cross to bear tonight, no, not tonight

And I'm not Jesus though I have the same initials"

The Police - Oh My God

Oh my God you take the biscuit
Treating me this way
Expecting me to treat you well
No matter what you say.
How can I turn the other cheek
It's black and bruised and torn
I've been waiting
Since the day that I was born.

Ravenstar, whatever else happens in the messed up world of ours, you will always be dear to my heart for including both Tool and APC in your list! jesus.gif

Since these two songs have already been listed, I want to add this one by Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers--"Atheists Don't Got No Songs." I don't know if we have any bluegrass lovers on this site, but no list of deconversion songs is complete without it.

Anything by Tori Amos.

That's what I came into here to say! I've adored Tori since the 90s and have all her albums, but since deconverting, the lyrics mean so much more to me.

And relevant to the OP, I happened across this link while googling for something else: http://www.michaelnugent.com/2013/01/30/75-songs-for-atheists-agnostics-and-freethinkers/

Awesome lists!

I've come back to my teenage years a bit; I listened a lot to "bad religion". I like to relisten to it and connect back to the feelings/thoughts I hada at the time. Now I see that when I was 18 I was so close to leaving christianity. A shame that I became a member of that christian student group and radicalized there. But this music really reminds me that I was quite frustrated with xtianity at the time, making me sympathize with/respect that teenager version of me more! :)

I like how my perception of music has changed after deconversion. Another example, I love the song "imagine" by john lennon. There is a nice cover by jack johnson. This suggested that jack johnson is an unbeliever himself, which triggered me to pay attention to other lyrics by him, and I noticed some sentences in other songs by him that confirm my suspicion. Not that I care a lot about what someone (dis)believes, but it's just funny! ;)

Squalloscopes- Big Houses (

It seems to be about someone rejecting religions/Catholicism and I think many here could relate to it!

Particularly this line: 'In the circle 'round the kitchen table, I say my amens because I feel blessed, secretly hoping while joining hands that they can't feel my trembling fingertips'

And my favourite: I want trees instead of gravestones, nothing to confess!

I love love love this song =)

This song is really what sealed the deal for me when I heard it and really paid attention to the lyrics.

I've been listening to some of Roy Zimmerman on youtube, his songs are more comedy but they are quite fun. At least I think so, depends what you're looking for tongue.png  Think he may have song on other subjects, but not sure - only listened to his Christian stuff.

  • 3 weeks later...

I'd recommend David Bazan's "Curse Your Branches" if you want something a little more melancholy, and Quiet Company's "We Are All Where We Belong" for something more uplifting and triumphant. Also, you should check out Tim Minchin's songs for some comic relief!

I had been told all my life the story about the difficult journey of the lonely Christian in a secular world. They didn't mention how it is for the lone unbeliever in a Christian world.  The sense of alienation is intense.  People are strange when you're a stranger...

"People Are Strange" -- sung by the Doors.

People are strange when you're a stranger
Faces look ugly when you're alone
Women seem wicked when you're unwanted
Streets are uneven when you're down

When you're strange
Faces come out of the rain
When you're strange
No one remembers your name
When you're strange
When you're strange
When you're strange

People are strange when you're a stranger
Faces look ugly when you're alone
Women seem wicked when you're unwanted
Streets are uneven when you're down

When you're strange
Faces come out of the rain
When you're strange
No one remembers your name
When you're strange
When you're strange
When you're strange

When you're strange
Faces come out of the rain
When you're strange
No one remembers your name
When you're strange
When you're strange
When you're strange
