Castiel233
One is struck by how lucky they are (rather think they are) to have the truth. As Lionel Hutz, from The Simpsons says, "There's the truth (followed by a negative shake of the head) "and there's the truth" (followed by a positive nod of the head). Naturally in their mind they DO have the truth, other branches of the Christian faith are in some degree of error and must be prayed for. To them the truth is as clear as day and they despair that others cannot see it.Unable to convince you of the truth, often, far too often they then retreat into threats of an angry god, who presides over His hell watching you burn........ Muslims have the truth and Jews have the truth as far as those respective faiths are concerned, yet according to the Christians (bright and happy clappy with NT in hand and heart), these other monotheists are in terrible error Islam and Judaism stand aghast that Christians have turned a man into a God, Christians wail and weep that others cannot see the truth that Jesus is man and god, but mostly god and forever alive....... Each is quite sure the other sits in error (and judgement), each is unable to see beyond the filters of their own theology. A devout Muslim, who loves Allah who all his heart and keeps His commands goes to the Hell created by Yahweh, if Christianity be true........should Islam be the one true faith, that I suggest that Christians and Billy Graham load up on super sun screen, because it is going to be needed. Talking of Graham, some years ago other Christians leaders wrote to him (in the spirit of love, or so they claimed) denouncing him for making some heterodox statement, calling him out for making a grave sin.......Billy Graham, arguably Americas most famous non fictional Christian, being told by other Christians that he has not got the truth........... I do think, very much so that Christians, very very often create an image in their mind of what they want Jesus to be and its far, far removed from what the Bible says of Him. Take the issue of family values, the church supports and promotes it,the Christian right in the states are right behind campaigns for such values, yet of Christ, who they claim as the Lord and master and indeed example, we find (as recorded and or implied in the NT) a man who publicly denied His own mother, advocated that families should hate and abandon each other and promised extra reward in Heaven for those that would abandon their families for His sake. He never married and died a virgin, after promising to turn families against each other.......... Where do believers get their family values from then... I submit again they create a Jesus in their minds who supports and shares their values, but this is not the Jesus of the Gospels as I understand Him and thus the church lies to the flock to keep them in church. I agree. If I was ever stuck talking to a Christian about family values (I would never choose to be in that conversation to begin with) then my first salvo would be: If God told me to sacrifice my son as a burnt offering then I would tell God to shove it.
Guest Furball
i heard a saying once, it said, 'in the beginning god created man in his own image, and ever since then, man has been returning the favor.' It's true, all these lovey dovey feel good christians have not even the remotest of clues who the real jesus of the bible is, or what he was really saying. Then they try to defend their lovey dovey god/jesus by cherry picking verses that were probably added in later anyways. The bible as a whole does not support a loving kind gentle god at all, not even the new testament alone supports the belief that god is all loving, kind, and gentle. Even jesus warned his 12 disciples that they should fear god because he has the power to murder people and then throw them in hell, and they were his chosen 12 disciples. If jesus said that god would throw his special 12 into hell, what chance do the rest of us have. I used to wonder (sarcastically) if other people were reading a different bible than the one i was reading. all i kept coming away with after reading scripture was hatred and fear and no hope for any positive future, either in this life or the next. jesus himself in the beatitudes made sure people knew that even if they obeyed him and did all kinds of works, that they would still be thrown into hell anyways. it's a rigged game, in christ-insanity, a person is damned if they do and damned if they don't. It's a lose-lose game.
SCM
Family values to them is more "just conform to our social norms" and very little to do with strengthening family ties between themselves, their kids and extended family's. when they talk family values they rarely talk about love (yet another departure form the NT jesus) which is the glue that holds family's together, instead it is all about behavior. "obey the father in the house, no gays please and keep pure/Amish girls thankyou" because everybody knows on the eighth day god created the nuclear family, and god fuck anyone who doesn't fit that format. W4CSC
http://godisimaginary.com/ If I can sucker them into defending their book, much less their "faith", whatever that means, I try to get them to go over as many of the chapters as their anger and little brains will tolerate answering these questions for me. The real "killer" seems to be Chapter 20, where we start talking about money. It always is for pastors... If they're still civil and no weapons have been pulled, I like to move on to the big question: http://whywontgodhealamputees.com/ and try to discuss why prayers to non-coincidental results are never answered. My grandfather's missing index finger was instrumental in my deconversion at 15 (I'm 69.) Why is CNN showing the blood and guts of their Jesus infomercial during primetime so the kids can be forced to watch it? Who is paying them to show this barbaric nonsense? Why is FCC allowing it, but I can't watch two teens having sex? (sorry...It's on while I'm typing and it's disgusting)
