The Seven Deadly Sins(More Reasons Why Xianity Makes No Sense)

I apologise in advance for not having a bible verse ready for every single thing I'm about to say. I never could focus on reading that damned book for more than two minutes at a time!

So I'm an anime fan, and my favourite anime is Fullmetal Alchemist. In Fullmetal Alchemist, there are 7 characters, each one a personification of one of the seven deadly sins, and the 'Father'(as he is called in the manga and anime) is the one who created them; removed them from himself so he would be without sin. His goal in the anime was to become god.

Anyway, as I love those 7 characters a lot(Greed and Envy are my favourites!), I was thinking about the seven deadly sins: Greed, Wrath, Envy, Pride, Sloth, Lust, and Gluttony. Immediately, a few of those stuck out to me as obvious character traits of Yahweh.  Xians seem to be of the mindset that Yahweh is without sin or cannot sin because he's god and that's impossible, and sinning is going against god's expectations of you(no pressure!).

This is common knowledge among Xians and anyone who has heard things about xianity:  'Do not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.(exodus 34:14)''

So bam, there's Envy. Now I know there are subtle differences between envy and jealousy, but they are virtually the same.

For Wrath, Nahum 1:2: The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD takes vengeance and is filled with wrath. The LORD takes vengeance on his foes and vents his wrath against his enemies.'' Other examples include the fact he severely punished Adam&Eve for innocently trusting a being they didn't know they weren't supposed to trust. Turning Lot's wife into salt just for looking back(you can't not be wrathful to do something like that), and also wiping out almost all of his creations with a flood. And many other things, but those are just a couple.

His Greed is obvious. He wants everyone to worship him. He wants to be in control of everything (and technically he should be and the devil and free will of humans should really be no obstacle to an almighty god, but well, you know all this stuff).  Gluttony could kind of coincide with that as well, him being a glutton for our unfailing and unlimited love and trust in him.

Sloth: No verses for this that I could think of, but just take a look at the world around you and those billions of unanswered prayers! An almighty being like Yahweh could end suffering, disease, hate crimes, global warming and all that nasty stuff, along with answer every single prayer easily! Right? Christians would say: Yeah, he could, but, you know. Mysterious ways, man.'' But he doesn't do any of that! Sounds lazy. Or just rude.

Pride: God seems pretty damn prideful to me, claiming to be all-powerful and almighty and how  he's stronger than anything else; the creator of all creations. Plus you have to be proud  to call yourself 'God'.

Now Lust.... I couldn't really think of anything that I know about God lusting after... Lust is about more than just sexual wantings after all; one can lust after anything they strongly desire. But I'm drawing a blank, so he might get a free pass on that.

But there you have it. Xians are supposed to live without sins, especially the seven deadly ones, so they can become closer to God. Or... maybe they're supposed to avoid the seven deadly sins, so they don't become too much like God. Hmmm. Anyway, just some food for thought =)

And for fun, here's a picture of all the Sins from Fullmetal Alchemist!

When Mary became betrothed to Joseph she became his.  For all intents and purposes Mary was Joseph's wife.  God got a married woman pregnant.  How could God choose Mary without wanting to get her pregnant?  It does not matter that God used magic instead of sexual relations.  The baby was not of Joseph so the baby would be stealing from Joseph by inheriting Joseph's estate.  How could God want Mary without coveting a man's wife?  Mary belonged to Joseph but God didn't ask Joseph for permission.  Joseph found out after his wife was already pregnant.

Not only does this offend modern sensibilities but it would have offended ancient sensibilities and God's law as well.

Fullmetal Alchemist is indeed one of the best anime series ever made (I'm a fan of the original series though, not Brotherhood).

The God of the Old Testament epitomizes each of those seven. If God were a member of Ex-C he would have all seven listed under his interests and nothing else, and his profile bio would be just those seven words repeated over and over.

Another thing, just like with the Ten Commandments, is this the best list of "sins" God could come up with? Most of the commandments are egotistical and flat out lame, while the "sins" are limited to a mundane seven. Where is genocide? Child abuse? Slavery?

Yeah, I agree, the Ten Commandments weren't very...creative I guess? And the bible basically condones child abuse and slavery(especially slavery it has no issue with) so why would one of those be a sin if god allows it happily haha. I'm sure I could have found better examples if I actually read the buybull, but man I can't even focus on fiction prose I WANT to read. I'm an avid non-fiction book reader =)

So, I appreciate all your guys' above posts haha

Ah really? I love all versions of FMA; Original 2003 series, Manga, and Brotherhood. However I feel that the original series was lacking in some character development, and I didn't like really what they did with Roy(my favourite character ever! I cosplay him, actually), with him giving up his goal to become Fuhrer at the end of the series and he just sort of gloomed and sulked because Ed was gone.(In Conqueror of Shambala, the movie after the Original series). I liked the stuff they did with him in the beginning though, but I think one just has to watch all of both animes if they want to get the full 'effect' of the series. Both are fantastic in their own aspects, IMO!

God is guilty of all but one of the sins he forbids us to do (assuming he exists). You cannot name a sin (except forsaking the Holy Spirit) he is not guilty of. The Father did forsake the Son, so there's that, but that's not the same as forsaking the Holy Spirit.

Which is always a great argument to use against the faithful and their universal morality stance. Murder and genocide are wrong but God can do it because he's great!!!

What I didn't like about Brotherhood was that compared to the original, I felt it lacked heart. I felt like I was watching a sequence of events rather than a story. I didn't like that they skimmed over Hughes's death, and I when tuned in to the Roy vs Envy fight, I was basically: "WTF is this!? I'm done."

"Now I know there are subtle differences between envy and jealousy, but they are virtually the same."

Here's the difference:

Envy: I want what you have

Jealousy: This is mine and you can't have it

Biblegod goes out of his way to state he IS jealous. He throws tantrums whenever anyone or anything gets in the way of his jollies. Horses are ordered to be hamstrung, but not killed, so that Israel wouldn't "trust" them for deliverance. Joshua 11:6

This is like a father stomping on his girls kittens because he feels they get more love and attention that he does. And you'd better agree with him...

"The Bible never contradicts itself! It is the perfect word of God" scream the xians. They obviously like to ignore anything that may cause them to think twice about what they believe in.

It's interesting to note that the "7 deadly sins" are found nowhere in the bible, at least not as a list.  Examples of each of them however are plentiful.

Here is an interesting article:  http://www.calvin.edu/academic/philosophy/virtual_library/articles/deyoung_rebecca_k/7deadlysins.pdf

That's right, and that is an interesting article. I remember looking up stuff about sins before and not being able to find anything in the bible, and forgot about that until now. It's funny how even though they are noted as character flaws, that the abrahamic followers still note them as sins.
