The Times, They Are A Changing

The entertainment industry uses the media to get their social messages out. They use TV shows, movies, etc. as their conduit. Positive projections for homosexuality and interracial relationships have been prevalent in many TV shows lately.

They have also taken on religion too. The Good Wife had a very anti-religion segment in the show last night. The lead character’s teenage daughter had become interested in Christianity and last night she renounced her faith. Richard Dawkins had a cameo spot openly ridiculing Christianity.

On FX the TV show The Americans, the lead characters are atheists and are dealing with their teenage daughter’s interest in religion and recent baptism. These are just a couple of the many examples I’ve noted lately where religion is being openly attacked and ridiculed on TV.

It seems religions sacred untouchable status in American is beginning to melt away.

Someday we'll be able to look back and say we were Atheists when Atheism wasn't cool!"

More power to them, and us. I always love seeing anti religious stuff on The Simpsons.

I'd love to see clips of both shows.

Good stuff!

I've always admired the way Joss Whedon handled religion in Firefly. He was antagonistic toward the idea of God without attacking the character who was a Christian. I think people would do well to be very clear in the distinction. Are they going after Christians or Christianity? Are they going after religion, or just Christianity?

NCIS: Los Angeles is another show that handles Islam fairly well. They recognize that it can be used for good or for evil, just like any religion. When religion is kept to oneself, it is often beneficial. When it is evangelistic in nature, it becomes destructive, mostly because it is rammed down the throats of others like a sales pitch.

When religion is kept to oneself, it is often beneficial.

I think for a few people it can be, but there are so many ways religion, even when kept to oneself, can do harm. It can cause or worsen anxiety and depression, as many ex-c members will attest.  It can give false hope of seeing loved ones again, to be dashed when one accepts that is an unsupported claim.  It can lead to suicide, from depression or from a belief in an afterlife that brings relief from the strains of life.  It is also a celestial dictatorship, complete with thought control.  The harm this kind of religion does is to the autonomy and intellectual development and freedom of the believer.  Merely keeping it to oneself is not enough to negate its harms or provide sufficient benefit to outweigh the harms.

I am glad they are bringing these issues to shows on tv. Religion has never worked, nor has it ever brought society as a whole together. Religion separates us as a species. It is past time that we get over the whole thou shalt not's and allow people the freedom to be and express themselves who they really are without fear of retribution or ridicule. I am glad christianity is being exposed on national as the hate/death cult that it is. More power to them.

One of the recent blogs on this site noted that religion exhibits tribal characteristics. The various tribes are identified by their denominational names and each tribe has their own unique rules and traditions. These various rules and traditions have a tendency to seep into the culture and also into laws passed by legislatures. And thus religion becomes part of everybody's life whether they like it or not.
