People seem to think that a ministry can do no wrong! Well, the ministry we are involved with since starting to "help" us has screwed me over financially more than once, they have been slum landlords, and now they say "we're sorry we are charging you too much rent, hand over your personal documents and we will help you find a new place!"

I cannot convince my husband or relatives they are doing wrong! I need to break away from this!

Good luck with everything.

I don't trust ministries, especially when it comes to money.  I used to be a landlord and had a horrible experience with a woman who rented one of our apts through a ministry.  Christian were some of our worst renters in general.

When I read the title of the thread, I thought to myself "Ministry scam? Probably.". Then I read the OP and "probably" became "definitely".

Stuff like our social security numbers, birth certificates, they are trying to push us into one particular complex that needs that info.

Ministry is a euphemism for scam.  Sorry to hear all these things are happening to you bird28.  I hope you find a new place soon and get away from that church.

New landlords need to know who a prospective tenant is.  Asking for SSNs and demonstrating you are a US Citizen is hardly a burden when looking for a new place to live.  If you are concerned with your current landlord nelping you find a new place, you can simply choose to do it yourself.

It sounds to me like you've probably been dependant on these people to help you at some point and now they feel they have control of you. That sucks, and it's hard to break free from situations like that because you probably feel you can't do it on your own, and maybe you can't, I don't know your situation. Take control of your situation as much as possible, check Craigslist, rent just a room for now if you have to. Whatever it takes to get on your feet and try not to give up anymore of your independence. That's how you end up in these controlling situations. I've been there. Good luck to you :(
