Just A Little Rant About People Who Proclaim How 'christian' They Are Then Are Mean Spirited

I know we here all know that no one is in fact 'renewed by the spirit' but I am currently being eaten up by some of the hypocrites I have had the misfortune to be associated with.

Is there no critical thinking going on? Don't you ever think to yourself for one minute 'hmm, I spend all this time in church and am always singing about being filled with the spirit, but in fact my behaviour is consistently mean spirited and petty, let me do something about it!'

I just can not get my head around it. I tried to be a 'good person' when I was a Christian and even more so now that I know there is no pie in the sky when you die. So how do these people reconcile , on a day to day basis, their hateful words and actions with being 'Christlike'. Of course we know biblegod is vicious and unpleasant and Jesus has swords coming out of his mouth and curses trees for not bearing fruit out of season. But they subscribe to the 'nice' image with GodIsLove and JesusLovesTheLittleChildren so there is no excuse.

Just to give an example, one had the nerve to say to me 'I had a word from the Lord and I forgive you for making me angry'. What was she angry about? That I told her her behaviour was uncalled for. What was her behaviour? Telling a step grandchild they are not getting any Christmas presents because they are 'only for her real grandchildren'.

None of that is addressed, only a big performance about how upset she was at being sent a polite email the next day saying 'the step child (primary school age) was upset by your words yesterday. Who you buy presents for is your decision but to hurt a child's feelings by highlighting the distinction was unnecessary.'

These things are eating me up.

Grrr yeah there was something similar that bothered me too, back when I went to church as a kid , Kinda similar, there was this awful, petty, privileged girl that kept being nasty to me, completely uncalled for, every time I would tell my mother, she would talk with her mother. The girl's mother, instead of correcting her behavior or scolding her, or even listening to me when I tried to explain what had happened would say something in this really serene preachy sweet voice along the lines of "You know it really doesn't matter what happened, what matters is the forces of darkness are clearly at work here trying to cause friction between you two lord I just pray whatever demon has come between these two girls please cast it out blah blah blah" on and on. Because if your kid misbehaves, its demons, right, not terrible parenting. Like they can just pray, or be "renewed in the spirit" and even if they keep doing the same things after that it's fine because they are a "work in progress" and if you disagree with anything they do, you are in the wrong because they are magically righteous, as if prayer and belief are a good substitute for being a sensitive, kind person.

Compartmentalization is a tool they use to avoid or mitigate cognitive dissonance.

The more conservative their "beliefs" the meaner they seem to get.

A lot of Christians sadly are not moved and comforted by their faith, but rather they are controlled by it. There's a difference.
