SerenelyBlue Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 I have turned agnostic atheist for ,I think, round about 2 years, but I keep on reading and watching deconversion material. Material debunking Christianity and religion in general. Perhaps it is time to stop and just live without religion. To just make peace and follow my instinct that Christianity is a cult and not fear that I may be proved wrong. I have this irrational fear that Jesus may turn out to be the real thing. Which is ludicrous I know. Is anyone going through the same thing or am I alone? I must admit reading about religion and deconversion is an interesting hobby. I like coming to Ex-C and reading posts and blogs.
sdelsolray Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 Great idea! There are so many subjects you can explore that have nothing to do with religion. Certainly, some of them would not be of interest to you, some might be boring, some may be too difficult or technical to absorb, etc. But many will be fascinating, some will be enlightening, others satisfying, etc. Yes, losing religion includes losing reasons to lose religion. Ignoring religion, and its effects, is a new goal. So, my advice would be to spend time with new subjects, activities and pursuits that are not related to religion. 4
rjn Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 What he said. Engage in new pursuits, get a hobby, do whatever... something in particular you're interested in, or have been interested in trying out for a long time?
Shinzon Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 I just eventually lost interest. Like how many rebuttals and variations of the arguements does one really need to read to get it. I got bored. 2
Burny Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 Took me three years and now religion is simply a curious study for me once in a while. Mostly boring tho.
Jeff Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 After being away a while, it all seems so small and silly I can't imagine going back. Maybe after reading good materials and getting your defenses strong, just step away for a while from the whole topic and just be secular as much as possible
VacuumFlux Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 I told god, while I still believed, that the version of Him that I'd learned was really messed up and I've have to walk away for a bit. I fully intended to come back later, once I'd had time to heal and grieve. And then... I didn't. I still read stuff about world religions because humanity is fascinating, but I never did feel a need to go back and take Christianity seriously to disprove it. Was kinda surprised when I realized that. So take a break from thinking about Christianity, and if you need to go back and deal with it later, go ahead, but maybe you'll just stop caring.
SerenelyBlue Posted March 4, 2016 Author Posted March 4, 2016 Thank you for your suggestions. My rational mind knows that Christianity is seriously flawed, but the indoctrination wins out.
Vigile Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 You can't put a time limit on it. I deconverted 10 years before I found this site and when I did find it, I found a had in me a lot of pent up emotions and issues I needed to work through. Interacting with others here really helped me get over all of that. I think the amount of time it takes you to get it out of your system really depends on how deeply entrenched you were before you deconverted. I personally was pretty entrenched, so the feelings were deep. But, as others have said, it eventually works out of your system. I hang around here now just for the conversation and to occasionally help others if I feel I have something to offer. In your case, I'd say don't force yourself to shift gears as you may be leaving things on the table that you'll have to deal with later on like I had. But ultimately, only you know yourself and where you're at. 1
Sybaris Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 I smoked for the better part of 20 years. I haven't smoked for about 12 years now. There so much information about the hazards of smoking and I think people just look funny with that breathin' stick pokin' out their mouth. I understand why people smoke, the addiction and habit but now it just seems like it's a curious little segment of society that does it. After I threw off the last vestige's of religion I saw it in about the same way as I do smoking.
Fweethawt Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 Good article to be found on this subject right here --> http://www.ex-christian.net/topic/71758-criticizing-christianity-makes-you-a-better-ex-christian-because-science/#entry1097417
disillusioned Posted March 6, 2016 Posted March 6, 2016 I'll echo what others have said. If it's causing you distress, then stop focusing on Christianity. Study something else instead. Learn some physics, or biology. Learn how to write computer code. Study ancient history. Look into economics. Whatever tickles your fancy. If religion remains interesting to you, then keep studying it, but if it is causing you more harm than good, then study something else.
Vigile Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 I wonder if this topic shouldn't be in ExC Life. It doesn't seem appropriate to allow some proselytizing bozo to pipe in on a conversation where a member is dealing with deconversion issues. My 0.02
florduh Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 Jesus is real. Here's my bit of advice. And here's my advice: If you have any evidence for this bold assertion, feel free to bring it to the Lion's Den.

And here's my advice: If you have any evidence for this bold assertion, feel free to bring it to the Lion's Den. Yea and provide SerenelyBlue with your conclusive evidence that philosophical naturalism is true. oh you can't... you have to use circular reasoning and conjured up infinite universes. K. Serenely Blue, I get attacked like this all the time. They don't have a response. Why? Because they know I'm right. In the end, we're all zealots. They just don't want to admit it. Fresh meat. Throw him into the Lion's Den. 2
SerenelyBlue Posted March 7, 2016 Author Posted March 7, 2016 I couldn't finish reading your bullshit. Don't try and defend Christianity with sober reason. It's like trying to mix oil and water.

florduh Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 Better listen to Buffettphan - she's a real hard ass. But seriously folks, for those who would undermine the very necessary mission of this site please don't doubt that the hammer will be dropped. I would enjoy that!

I wasn't trying to. I was blowing holes in the atheist paradigm. I didn't realize I was breaking rules, though. So goodbye.
