Relevant Magazine: Don't Text the Opposite Sex!! You will have an affair

Here's something to get your blood pressure up.

"

- Avoid giving your phone number to the opposite sex. If it is necessary to keep in touch with them, have your spouse give their number to them.

- If you already have someone of the opposite sex’s phone number, treat it as just that: a phone number (not a text number).

- If you receive a text message from someone of the opposite sex, choose to respond by calling them immediately instead of responding through text. Making a phone call communicates to them that you would prefer speaking over the phone instead of via text.

- Treat your private email like you would a text message. It’s understandable that you might not be legally permitted to Cc your spouse on a work email to the opposite sex, but when you are communicating from your private email with the opposite sex, copy your spouse. This provides transparency between you and your spouse and also communicates to the opposite sex your desire to keep communication public.

- If you are feeling an emotional or sexual pull to a particular opposite sex member, especially during text messaging, immediately stop. In person, let this individual know your desire to respect your spouse, even with text messages. Confess this behavior to your spouse, repent and begin the healing process. If you don’t stop, the emotional and/or sexual detachment from your spouse will continue to broaden as you continue in communication with the opposite sex person. Please stop."

That's just stupid. No pressure change here.

It's pretty easy to not have sex with women who aren't my girlfriend.

I just don't have sex with them.

Such difficult. Much wow.

People who seriously lack that much self control are going to end up cheating anyways.

Good grief. People need to get a grip.

I'm single, I have a married friend, should she stop texting me? What about when/if I get a partner, do my friend and I stop texting each other? How ridiculous. If things are that bad you don't need to stop texting you need to see a psychiatrist.

Notice its a Christian writing the article?

Morality someone... tell me again where your morals come from? Ohhhh of course Satan is tempting you and you gota be wary... yep. I feel sorry for you christian. I don't rely on an ancient book to guide my morals.

This is the kind of bullshit that leads irrational people to believe in things like a "rape chromosome".

I used to help moderate the Relevant Magazine message boards back in the day haha. I would say half of us moderators are now atheists.

That's fascinating and ridiculous, just like the article in OP.

Well to moderate a message board you have to be somewhat tech-savvy, and to be tech-savvy you have to do logical thinking, and when you do logical thinking...

Then again, I am an engineer and yet it took me 25 years to find my way out of the mind-maze.  Sigh...

Oh my god. That's paranoid.

A while ago in Sunday School with the teenagers (where I show up just because it's slightly less boring than adult SS and I don't want to seem snobby, since I know them all), they were talking about purity or whatever and one of the leaders said something about not going on a car ride with another guy from the church, implying that would be inappropriate and borderline-cheating. I wondered if it would actually be inappropriate, despite my not having been Christian for several years, and couldn't figure out exactly what made it so bad to be good friends with someone of the opposite sex and spend one-on-one time with that person. Because of physical differences? Are they having spiritual sex just by hanging out? Because they're each attracted to the opposite sex? Does that mean gay people who are dating or married can't have friends of the same sex? Are bisexuals not allowed to have any friends at all? Of course none of this applies to fundy Christians because of OMOW. I was just thinking of how insane this rule would get if taken to its logical conclusion. Christians have a wall built between men and women that means they have to examine everything they do in a platonic context with people of the opposite sex, to avoid "sexual impurity," or even anything that might look like it (thanks to Paul's obsession with appearances).

Yeah I've actually been scolded by a pastor for complimenting his wife on her southern accent. I complimented her and the next service I was "convicted by the holy spirit" (or, scolded from the pulpit by the angry, manipulative pastor) to stop such pointless flattery. Then I was told that I care too much what people think - isn't that a symptom of people trying to constantly call you out on your perceived sinful patterns?

Since I was such a terrible young man, I would get intense stares from the pastor each time I spoke with a woman at church. Every time the service ended, the pastor and elders would wait by the door so I couldn't leave without speaking with them.

Married men at the church would be told by pastors to change their phone numbers once they become married. A common answer to many questions asked to married men was "I'll have to ask my wife first."

I'm all for keeping families together and the importance of marriage, but these are definitely extremes and cult-like behaviors that only get positively enforced.

I've wondered how one goes about having an affair. So, now I know. Next question, how do you get women to text you, without charging you money I mean.

When people start bumping like bunnies, as Margee put it once, with each other at church they stop coming to church...and paying TITHING!

Gotta nip THAT in the bud! :3some:

CORRECTION: It was RONNA who made the "bumping like bunnies" comment - not Margee.

I'd like to laugh at your original post, Abijah, but Mrs. MOHO would soooo add 3 or 4 rules to the list.

She about soiled her BVD's when I came home from work a while back and announced I had hired a...gasp...FEMALE coder!

Yep, along with articles saying don't let any male ever be alone with your child whether you know them or not. Hmmm does that mean for the father too? Fathers seem to cause a lot of the damage, not the male stranger down the road.

My pastor was first a nuclear submarine engineer contracted with the Navy to work on parts of the SEAL delivery vehicle. He got depressed and left that to become a pastor.

I used to read Relevant Magazine when I was still a believer. It made me hate myself for being so weak. Every single time. <_<

If you text 100 women: "wanna fuck?",  you will get laid once or twice at least.

I'm afraid you are most observant, Lilith.

How does a man not see that co-dependence keeps him in unhealthy relationships until he is well into his 50's?

Long before texting, hell even before cell phones became known to normal people (he said normale! Heheheh!), Omni Magazine published speculative fiction, science-ish articles, and cool almost nekkid comix in glossy print GLORY!.

Brought them to morning meetings Sunday, Post Office was right on way to church building. Got busted reading Omni for scientific content during a very uninteresting service. Did I get the "..you are one of the core of youth leaders now! You MUST eschew all forms of SIN!"

Give up OMNI and all those great articles and good things? Learned then what was said in meetings sure as phuk wasn't practiced outside those walls. Found a hunger for things within those "youth" that went a long way past just "goddidit".

Now? Hell, I'd just text the pastor's cute redheaded wife and tell'r to come take a ride with me.. :)

I read some of the comments on that article, and fortunately, I didn't see any that failed to point out how crazy it is. Several commenters identified themselves as Christian and still said that anyone who can't text or speak to "the opposite sex" without being in danger of infidelity has problems.

Still, that's just the one article. I don't know how liberal Relevant's readership is, but I think Christianity as a whole encourages that type of extreme thinking, if not refusing to text people of the other sex specifically. They're so into debating and digging into every nook and cranny of "god's will" and navel-gazing about whether they're holy enough (e.g., we mustn't watch R-rated movies, we mustn't say "dang" because it's too close to cursing, we must examine absolutely everything in our lives to make sure it's Christ-centered) that I'm not too surprised someone decided texting leads to affairs.

Seriously? I'm retired so I have plenty of time. Question, where do you find their emIl addresses & can the police put you in jail for that?

I think the basic rule when I was a Xian was that if it's fun it's probably illegal or immoral. I assume that rule is still in force?

Could this be classified as obsessive-compulsive behavior?

Anyway it must drive them absolutely bonkers to worry like that - even if its a security blanket kinda thing for them. I wonder how many are driven out of the fold by this? I mean BOTH the obsessive ones AND their targets.
