Tuam babies: ‘Significant’ quantities of human remains found at former home

http://www.irishtimes.com/news/social-affairs/tuam-babies-significant-quantities-of-human-remains-found-at-former-home-1.2996599

Human remains of a significant number of babies and infants up to three years of age have been found on the site of the former mother and baby home in Tuam, Co Galway, it has been confirmed.

This follows work by the Commission on Mother and Baby Homes which carried out planned excavations there.

Local research records 796 infants and children recorded as having died in the Tuam home run by the Bon Secours Sisters between 1925 and 1961. There is not as yet any indication of exactly how many bodies have been discovered at the site.

And a second article.......

What IS up with Irish Catholics?  Have any of you seen the movie, The Magdalene Sisters?  Based on true stories, it is absolutely insane!

Sick and sad about these young children.  I haven't heard yet if anyone has any idea how they died, but there are stories of how they were treated when alive, and it's frightening!  So much for being prolife!

You're an ex-Catholic TABA? Huh... Few of them around here... Catholics never struck me as being batshit insane to the same degree as, say, fundamentalist Baptists or Pentecostals.

Yeah, I was raised Catholic, lapsed into agnosticism in my twenties but then got sucked in to the Church of Christ.  But I never quite bought the CofC fundamentalism and eventually staggered out onto the street, blinking in the sunlight and the fresh air. So here I am.

So in actuality, you're an ex-evangelical like most around here?

Catholicism seems to be just as much a cultural thing as a religious one. I have no data to back this up, but I have a feeling Catholics are more likely to "relapse" back into faith, albeit with a slightly more sane and nuanced (or perhaps not?) perspective. I've only stumbled upon a handful ex-Catholics on this site, and not a single former Orthodox.

Yeah, I rejected Catholicism when I was baptized at a Church of Christ.  But we're the product of all our life experiences, aren't we?  So I had the childhood indoctrination into the Catholic version of Christianity, so I'm partly cultural Catholic. Then I bought into the CofC ethos, more or less, though I was never personally evangelical, meaning I never felt motivated to win souls to Jesus, probably because my inherently skeptical and unspiritual nature was influencing me too.  That's the side of me that ultimately won out, leading me to finally, belatedly reject Christianity and theism completely.
