Moderator TABA Posted November 26, 2017 Moderator Share Posted November 26, 2017 I’ve found that one of the keys to happiness - both in my Christian and ex-Christian life, is to cultivate an attitude of thankfulness. You certainly don’t have to be a theist to do this. Here’s a good article from Ryan Holiday: https://thoughtcatalog.com/ryan-holiday/2017/11/heres-how-to-give-thanks-not-once-a-year-but-every-day/ Holiday has written a couple of books that have helped revived interest in the philosophy of Stoicism, which is widely misunderstood: Stoics aren’t necessarily ‘stoic’ in the modern understanding of the word. To anyone who is feeling somewhat ‘uprooted’ as a result of their deconversion, I would recommend looking into it. You may come to see that you can have a sense of purpose and direction in life without any supernatural beliefs. A good place to start is dailystoic.com. 3
goodgravy
It's funny; I feel that I am exactly the same person that I was when I believed. I kept the same morals. I am just as compassionate toward people as I have ever been. I know that some people go off the deep end once they lose their faith and get immersed in some weird shit. Ok, I didn't swear back then like I do now; that much has definitely changed. I don't despair. I didn't become a nihilist. I still feel there can be purpose in life. I don't want to be a dick to people because no one wants treated badly. I don't. You don't. Boom. Let's be friends. I will check out this stoicism soon.
