You can't possibly believe that health insurance would go away without government "protecting" it.

YES...I DO...  Or, at minimum, it would go back to what it was before LBJ, a protection against catastrophic illness or injury.

Oh..BTW...long time no see Ro.

@Burnedout Is there an example of a country (that you know of) where Libertarian principles are applied and working and you think is a good example of how a country should be run? I'm not being a smart ass. I am really curious as to the system you believe is the best and having a good example of how it is working (not theory, but one in practice). It doesn't have to be a perfect example....no system is perfect, but one you think is pretty good? Like I think Belgium is a pretty good example of how democratic socialism can work. It's not perfect, and has it's flaws, but in general, and in my experience, I think the system over all helps and protects it's citizens while allowing people to have a decent life and even thrive as there are some wealthy areas and people as well as almost no (I think it's around 3 or 4 percent) poverty.

Ann,

Try the nation of Chile.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miracle_of_Chile  There was a group of Chileans, known as "the Chicago boys," who were trained under Milton Friedman who guided the country to a free market system after Pinochet took control of the country and turned it from a third world shithole to what amounts to a first world nation.  The nation has it's critics, but even they admit that it is FAR better off than before they took over.  It is a stark contrast when compared to the rest of Latin America.

Edit...Pinochet, whom I do not condone his human rights abuses, did later abducate the governance to the legislative branch of their government and backed away, and let the people work it out.

Just throwing this out there without comment, other than to mention it's fresh news:

Chinese credit rating agency Dagong, based in Beijing, downgraded US sovereign ratings from A- to BBB+ overnight.

The reason: “deficiencies in US political ecology” and tax cuts that “directly reduce the federal government’s sources of debt repayment” weakening the base of Washington’s debt repayment.

The ratings are now level with those of Peru, Colombia and Turkmenistan.

And they have been put on a negative outlook.

But are they better off than a democratic socialist country like Belgium or the Scandinavian countries?

After reading about the chicago boys and the free market helping the Chileans that a system with a free market and privatization combined with democracy and social protections were all factors in helping the people of Chile. I also read the article florduh posted, and it seems the experiment didn't work?

I have an American friend who has lived in Belgium for 20+ years. She has family in Chile, visits often and always comes back happy and loves being there. I'm going to ask her what she and her family think about the Chilean government, and compare since she has experience with both countries. Thanks for the info:)

Ann,

The simple question you have to ask yourself is....do you want more freedom or more protection?  With freedom brings more personal responsibility to take care of yourself.  With Socialism, you have to do what your told to one degree or another.
