In 1932, Australia Declared War On Emus—And Lost

Quote

The Great Emu War in Western Australia was a bizarre and futile effort.

HERE IS A SENTENCE THAT is at once absurd yet unsurprising: in 1932, Australia declared war on emus.

This is not an early April Fool’s joke; the above video shows the very real Great Emu War of Western Australia, in which soldiers with machine guns were deployed to fight off the flightless birds.

What did the emus do to deserve armed combat? Western Australian farmers had been facing hard times with their crops following the Great Depression, and their difficulties increased tenfold with the arrival of some 20,000 emus migrating inland during their breeding season.

..snipped story from Atlas Obscura

PLEASE EXCUSE THE ANNOYING COMMERCIAL BREAKS IN THE CONVERSATION:

As with everything these days, the cost of keeping the Ex-C forum up and running has been rising. Inflation? In part, but the primary reason is this: As participation in the forums grows, costs increase. The Ex-C forums will remain free of charge to everyone, but if you believe this little corner of the Internet provides value to you or others, and you feel inclined to help keep us online, please consider making a one-time donation or becoming a regular contributor. Oh, and as an incentive (no, you won't be given any bogus promises of eternal bliss), if you do become a regular contributor by signing up for any monthly or yearly patron package, this annoying ADVO will disappear.

And now, back to the regularly scheduled conversation...

Back in the 90's here in the USA, there was a big push to get farmers and ranchers to raise emus.  There was hype that it was going to be the next big meat people would want to eat.  Except that it never happened and several farmers/ranchers fell for the hype and got hung out to dry on that scheme and they couldn't afford to feed them so they just let them run wild.  There was, and maybe still are, some flocks of emus wandering around the countryside in several states that are now wild.  I have a cousin in Oklahoma who owns a ranch, and he told me that there are several ranchers and farmers in the area that fell for that hyped scam.  Those birds can actually survive the winter there supposedly.

Is this a piece from the Onion?   I mean really, why would farmers need assault rifles and machine guns to protect their farms?

If hunting an Australian emu is anything like hunting a North American turkey, they are WAY smarter and cagier than you can imagine.

Well that's good. If you had taken the time to explain what you meant, this thread might have gone nowhere!
