♦ ficino ♦
Today I came across Aquinas saying that Jesus is the speaker in Isaiah 63:1: "to the angels asking, 'Who is that who comes out of Edom?' Jesus answered, 'I, who speak justice.'" (ST 1a 57.5 co). I assume Aquinas is following an old tradition of interpreting these verses about God coming to judge the Edomites as a messianic reference. Edom was south of the Dead Sea. It makes me wonder whether Mark or a source was riffing off this passage when penning the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness, since after that, Jesus returns from the desert to speak justice and begin his ministry. This is a stretch, obviously, and I don't see reference to the Isaian passage in any of the synoptic accounts of Jesus' temptation in the wilderness. Anyway, made me wonder.
