Left, Right, or Center?

Recommended Posts

I'm keeping to my pact on not arguing politics, but I'm curious as to how many people at ex-C would be willing to express how they view themselves, politically. If you had to choose between left, right, and center, where would you place yourself on that scale? It would be interesting to see where the high numbers are on this three choice spectrum.

I'm putting myself as a centrist.

Ha was about to reply to you in PM. I was actually wondering if a poll could be set up.

In addition to JP's question I'm interested in if you've changed since deconversion or as a process of deconversion?

So I'm center leaning left. I have moved from a very conservative right stance during my religious days.

Honestly, life is too complicated these days to choose your label from two or three categories. The labels mean different things to different people anyway. For example, I'm a gun owner and support 2A as I understand it. For this reason the Left doesn't want me but the Right cools off when they find out I'm in favor of rather strict gun legislation given current circumstances in this country. There are similar nuances when it comes to welfare, immigration and other political hot buttons. For many on both sides it an all or nothing proposition if you want to identify as one of them. No thanks.

Agree with this. I just think its an interesting general ball park idea of where people sit politically.

I agree with Stephen Fry when he talks about the left/right dichotomy. Or in our case the left/center/right trichotomy.

The problem with such labels is instead of addressing an argument you end up dismissing the person as a "bleeding liberal" or a "heartless conservative" and so on.

We humans seem to very much like labelling things.

I'm counting this as 3 centrist's so far. lol

I've been paying attention to things said, and I figured the two of you more for the center than left or right. LF isn't for regressive things. Florduh isn't anti 2a, but will side with gun control. But neither are you guys seem like GOP material at the same time, nor am I.

I came from a southern, christian conservative family. Upon leaving christianity I found myself leaning liberal. As part of my transition from belief to non belief. But as I ventured out into the liberal left, I found some things that didn't quite add up, didn't make sense, and didn't quite sit well. It never compelled me back to belief, but it did compel me back towards a centered perspective between liberals and conservatives. I like what Steven Pinker has to say about being centrist, and picking what seems to make the most sense from both the left and right sides of the spectrum, while disregarding that which doesn't make very much sense to me.

I'm with whoever has the best idea at the time.

As a further way of describing yourself with the afore mentioned 'orrible labels how do you describe yourself in terms of the following:

Conservative, Liberal, Libertarian, Socialist, Communist, Totalitarian, Progressive etc (Probably many I haven't come across so feel free to add and explain your own leanings)

I'm probably liberal/progressive, though I also consider some libertarian ideas worth considering, and some socialist. So a real hodge poge. Basically if I think an idea is good I accept it, if its bad I reject it.

Edit: Which is kinda what JP's analysis about me above is.

Does that count as center, with the ability to go left or right of center accordingly?

I don't think that it counts as any of the above.

If hard right has the best idea, that's the idea I'm supporting. The same goes for far left.

I don't view politics as a team sport, and don't see the point in saying I'm in any particular position when I can easily support the opposite extreme depending on the issue and details.

I'm of the view that political loyalties are stupid, and that we as citizens should be looking at issues on a case by case basis.

I don't think political parties add any value to our system of government, and if anything actually hinder the system.

Then I'll count it as left, center, and right.

I'm a centrist who tends to lean a little to the left.

In my Christian days I was right wing conservative. Through my deconversion I moved towards the center, and now here we are.

I consider myself a moderate liberal.

I think the old Left- Right spectrum is rather . . . one dimensional . . . and not very helpful.  If I had to choose a label for myself, I’d say I’m a Classical Liberal.  I’d suggest http://polquiz.com/ for a more two-dimensional metric.

Here’s my result...

It is, but for a simple research it gives a broad idea of how people lean.

See... I'm center left... just haha

Nah I'm a fricking libertarian---- WTF??

Probably a little north of center, but about as left as what I'd think.

It has us both as libertarians. Mine didn't copy over correctly but my location dot is one intersection to the right of where they placed yours. But I did answer the questions very libertarian and it was obvious that that would be the outcome.

I have found a site I think to be slightly better as it asks better and more questions to give a better result.... though much the same for me:

Add a third dimension (depth) to the Nolan two-dimensional chart.  After that, add a fourth dimension, a temporal element...how one has been/changed over their lifetime.

I dont really know what libertarian is. I dont want to control people. Let them do their own thing. Totalitarian sounds bad.

It's interesting when you add the left to right and top to bottom. I'm clearly not totalitarian either. Basically libertarian is supposed to be for personal liberty and freedom. The opposite being totalitarian. I think you're probably left and top of center for sure.

Wow! Left, Center, Right concept got complicated fast....I'll keep it simple....

Sorry... you can pretty much blame that on me. I asked JP if we could expand it as I thought it would be very interesting to know more about members political leanings without actually getting into politics. Don't send me to hell k? ;):D

So going off the 3 dimensional chart I'm a Libertarian left for Tolerant and Market Democracy.

That's a mouthful... so LF what's your political leanings, left or right? Oh I'm a left of center libertarian tolerant and market democrat.

.

.

.

Eh what?

I'm sensible 😛

That's about exactly where I would have put that dot if you'd shown me the image and given me a pen. Interesting.
