Geezer
I think this transition from belief to non-belief is fairly typical. At some point in time a believer realizes they don't really know why they say they believe the things that they profess to believe. It eventually occurs to them that they say they believe the things they do for no other reason other than they have told to say that they believe those things. Often they realize they are just parroting what their family and friends say they believe. Then it occurs to them they have no evidence that validates their beliefs. That is often the way the door is open to reexamine their beliefs and seek evidence that validates what they've been told to believe. When they discover there is no evidence that validates their stated beliefs that often begins their journey out of religion. I think it's fair to say that most Christians don't really know why they believe the things they say they believe. Many claim their faith is based on the inerrancy of the Bible but when questioned they reveal they know little or nothing about the Bible or it's history. They just accept that it's true and never question that belief.
