Moderator Joshpantera Posted June 7, 2018 Moderator Share Posted June 7, 2018 Here's a rant, WTF is wrong with people, making the standard lunch time dam near the same all over every town in the country????? I usually do my best to eat before 12:00pm or after 1:00pm to avoid the droves of fucking people all cattle herding into drive thru's and restaurants. This INTJ introvert can't deal with over crowding!!! Today, I worked until after 12:00 pm and then broke for what I thought would be a quick lunch. I spent 30 fucking minutes in line at Burger King. When ever I go there and no one is in line behind me at all, they usually ask me to pull up and they'll bring out the food. For no apparent reason because no one else is in line. Today, they didn't ask so much as one car to pull forward to get the line going. Stupid assholes. Always doing the opposite of what makes the most sense. I have half a mind to actually proceed with one of those 'rate our store' things and give them a rant to remember. It seems like business should mix it up and come up with ways of letting break for lunch at different times to spread the crowds out in some way. It's a completely uncoordinated cluster fuck, nationwide.

older
I never use drive-throughs. They are almost always slower than going inside. But regardless of that, it is kind of stupid the way we eat by the clock instead of when we are hungry. Perhaps that's part of the reason so many of us are overweight. MM's observation is spot on. 2 p.m. is a great time to go out to eat. Too late for most business lunches and too early even for the senior dinner special. Most restaurants are empty at that time.
Bhim
I'm an early riser so I go to lunch around 11 AM. It's a very effective way to avoid the rush. Look at it this way. By standardizing the lunch hour, people have automatically created a separate time when you and I can avoid them.

Super Moderator florduh Posted June 9, 2018 Super Moderator Share Posted June 9, 2018 When I worked, even when I had my own business that catered to other businesses, it only made sense to be consistent. Most shifts start at (roughly) 8:00, lunch break in the middle of the day 12:00 - 1:00 and then four more hours to go until quitting time. Obviously some people work different hours, but this became pretty much the standard work day many decades ago. With lunch time being standardized, the restaurants can have more people working during anticipated busy hours. Now I eat when I'm hungry or when friends have decided to eat out somewhere at a particular time. I rarely eat anything after 7:00pm and my next meal is around noon the next day, sometimes later. That would be my breakfast. Even peak hours aren't all that bad at the restaurants I frequent. As previously mentioned, if you hate crowds that much just bring your own food to work or get it delivered.
Fweethawt
What's worse is waiting to get your food, heading into work only to find that they fucked your order up and now you're stuck having to eat something you didn't want. This happens all the time... And they want 15 bucks an hour to fuck up like this.

The unaffordability of $15 am hour is probably what's making McDonald's start implementing automated kiosks. So the free market is going to solve your problem for you! Super Moderator florduh Posted June 9, 2018 Super Moderator Share Posted June 9, 2018 Speaking of the $15 an hour question, I have a bigger beef. I didn't authorize my congressman to make $174,000 for his part time job with $1.27 million allotted to run his office, free air travel, lifetime membership to the Capitol health clubs and restaurants, lifetime free preferred parking and a lifetime pension at 80% of his salary. The kid working his/her way through school, the retiree whose SS check isn't enough to live on, the single mother and others who must work in the service industries are viewed by many as the undeserving poor who shouldn't be entitled to make a living wage at the only job they are able to get, and we hate them more if they need welfare. The people who cook and serve me meals, those who fix my car and the guys who mow my lawn are worth infinitely more to me than my congressman whose office is only open 133 days a year and he doesn't even show up for all of those. When he does show up, somehow it ends up costing me more money or freedom. A fair minimum wage for people who actually work, pay taxes and perform a useful service doesn't really seem to be our biggest problem.

I just think $15 an hour is way above fair in most markets. Hell, that's more than I made as a grad student peon until just four years ago. Instituting a single wage point for every market in the country is crazy. You might be able to survive on $10 an hour in Bumfuck Iowa, but in New York City or Los Angeles or Honolulu $20 an hour isn't enough to live on. However, the federal minimum wage is still $7.25 an hour and hasn't been raised in a decade. That's just not right in today's economy.

What would probably be best is to get rid of the federal minimum wage and let cities regulate this. That way of Seattle has a $20, $30, etc. minimum wage which does more harm than good, the libertarian admonition to "move elsewhere" would actually be reasonably possib

If someone has ties, school, sick mom, whatever and isn't surviving on the pay from the only job he can get, how is he going to pull off a move to another state or city? The only thing that makes sense is factoring in local cost of living. The only reason to even have a mandated minimum wage is that many, if not most, employers will pay desperate people as little as possible. There just needs to be some balance that affords some human decency to those who are working the best job they can get.
