A warming planet

Recommended Posts

Temperature records being set.

To add to this, New Zealand posted its warmest summer in 17/18 (Dec - Feb) on record.

I haven't checked yet, but these may bust the records in the 30's/40's.

I have come out of retirement to say one thing: I despair for us humans. We are going to kill our planet, and ourselves with it, because we are just too selfish and we can't adapt to these challenges. Those who want to can continue to shout and deny the evidence, but when it's too late, it's too late.

I don't think we will "kill the planet" as such, but certainly we are contributing to making the environment hard for us to live in, and directly responsible for the extinction of many species. Not to panic - the planet will be here long after humanity has gone extinct, and long after the last living thing dies on this planet.

If my memory serves me correctly, the major extinction events have been attributed to massive events - asteroids, super volcanoes etc. The event you are referring to is the Siberian Traps isn't it? It went on for 2 million years, killed 95% of species - often referred to as the Great Dying.

I'm not sure I'd put our current situation in the same boat... or planet.

However I do agree that between GW pollution and nukes, humanity has a serious problem on its hands.
