Why Magical thinking works for some people

Athletes, for example, often get "hot" and take control of game. Some call this momentum (Mighty Mo) or just plain old confidence. Momentum is often seen in football games. Teams with mo on their side continue to gain yardage on every play. It's almost like it's impossible for the defense to stop them and then suddenly a fumble or pass interception and Mo suddenly has changed sides. 


I've often heard this said of professional athletes, "If you don't believe you're the best player on the field then you shouldn't be out there." Confidence aka magical thinking definitely plays a role in achieving positive results. I think that is pretty self evident.
