Anyway, I remember one night we visited a Pentecostal church to hear a speaker from the Answers in Genesis people 🙄 and the worship leader was singing the same line over and over, with intensity. The music swelled, the crowd stirred and I remember thinking, “Oh. I remember this.” I had to get away from it for a few years to realize how emotionally manipulative it was.

Interestingly, I was always aware of the emotional manipulation. But then, ever since I started learning about communication, I learned that all communication is manipulation. So working on the tech side of the service, I knew when the key changes were coming or when bridge was about to pop in to change the active or tempo. We knew what chords evoked what emotions and what songs to play when. It was all mapped out ahead of time. Start with something high tempo and upbeat to get the congregation engaged for a couple songs, then key it down a tad for the next song to evoke solemness, then a much older and more "ancient" sounding song to get people into the ritual of communion etc. etc. If you came to me for the song list, I could show you what emotions you'd be feeling and when. Even if you actively resisted those emotions you'll still feel something (usually annoyance or anger at being actively manipulated). But especially in video editing, choice of the right song and the timing of it is beyond critical.

I was once making a video for veteran's day for my church and it was my mother's idea to highlight all the service members in our church. So I decided to do it in order of all our wars from inception to present. My mother gathered everyone's military service pictures and I started it making it. Basically, I either had a background that clearly defined the era or a video background. By the way, it is very hard to find WWI and WWII camera footage of boring recon missions and non-combat situations. I chose "Freedom" by Micheal W. Smith (good song, btw) and when it got to my uncle's era of service I remembered him talking about his service aboard the USS Forrestal when they landed a C-130 on the flight-deck (first and last time it's even been done) so I found footage of that to use as the background while his service picture and other's of that era showed up in the foreground. But in a glorious coincidence of how the video lined up in the timeline, as the song "Freedom" was starting to do a building crescendo, the C-130 was coming in for a landing on the Forrestal's flight-deck and I gasped as the timeline was playing saying out loud, "...is it...? ...IS IT?!" And in the instant of the crescendo's climax, the C-130's wheels touched down and I was in tears of joy screaming loud enough for the neighbors to hear because it was beautiful beyond words! The video matched the music. 😂 My uncle who remembers that event asked me for a dozen copies after the fact to send it his Forrestal buddies the video left such an impact on him.

I remember being surrounded by this garbage growing up, and of course all of the girls at my church were all about Micheal W Smith and such. Now, twenty years later, I'll catch a bit of some modern christian contemporary music on the radio or youtube or something, and realize that the stuff being put out today is indistinguishable from what was coming out in the 1990's. It all sounds EXACTLY the same, and is no less nauseating now than it was then.

Some modern worshit songs feel like soft porn.

Oh f***, I hate TRUST AND OBEY with a passion. It once was "hymn of the month" at Babble School. Me being female didn't help. Bullshit song, made for narcissists.

I see I'm late to the party with this thread.

Back when I was a Christian I hated modern worship music, and was dejected that such a rich musical tradition was abandoned in favor of vacuous and inane drivel. I wanted to worship Jesus, but the music my reformed church had us sing simply did not comport with the intellectual teaching they offered. It's probably for the best though, since this likely contributed to my deconversion at some level.

Now, as an ex-Christian I can simply ridicule evangelicals for cannibalizing their own religious history and neutering their faith of its ability to proclaim a message of any substance. I love reading such criticisms as this because it reminds me of my own prior contentions with this terrible religion.

I thought of this thread yesterday at my new periodontist. Christian worship music was playing in the office and I felt so annoyed, luckily, the overhead light was blinking erratically and I asked for a different room with no music.

This is standard fare in TX.

Well...Texas is off the table if I ever relocate.

Seriously, the local bagel sandwich joint in town plays that shit continuously. I don't go there anymore and told Mrs. MOHO why.

Christian radio plays in the main office of my kids public elementary school. Sigh. I also have to sign a form every year to deny corporal punishment.

But in spite of all that crap,it really is a good school.

Sooooooo true. Even on Christian TV where they supposedly get the most talented singers/musicians who make a living at it and have record contracts etc.  and are broadcasting it Worldwide....most of it is unbearable to listen to. Christian musicians have little to NO talent..

The Pentecostal larger gatherings would drone on and on singing repetitiously for 2-3 hours BEFORE  any talking/preaching/teaching even started. Especially in the larger services and the more well known ministries.

They were always freaked out about and strongly against meditation mantra chanting. (And meditation w/o mantras.)  Or anything that involved repeating words was considered chanting to get the devil, demons, evil spirits to show up.  BUT, their 2-3 hours of repetition singing hypnotizing and putting people in trances making it easier to brainwash and manipulate them was Ok ?? Crazy.

They thought you had sing and worship until you were hoarse, mind numbingly braindead and exhausted  to CONJURE UP the presence of the Holy Spirit, God and Jesus. You couldn't just sing a few words of praise, thank them for a couple things,  talk to them and they would be there.

Sorry if I repetitiously :) rant sometimes. I am in early stages of deconverting and still have some sensitive emotions about some stuff.

These mindless repetitious Jesus/boyfriend songs were the beginning of my undoing. When I visited Hill Song Church in Australia where my brother lives, I used to make a bee-line to their fully licensed cafe during the 1/2 hour sing-song. I much preferred their cappucinos! This was much to the chagrin of my sister-in-law, because my 12-year-old-nephew would join me. Man, I could not stand that Darlene Schrek! "Shout to to the Lord" hand-swaying shit. That was 8 years ago! I'm so glad I don't have to listen to those indoctrinating Kool-Aid tunes anymore! Thing is you don't even know you're being manipulated and indoctrinated because they do anesthetize you especially when you're dragged into it since childhood.

Man, that is never so apparent and in your face as after you've seen the light, eh?
