Mistakes you made thinking it was “non-Christian”

Recommended Posts

Has anyone here made any foolish or silly mistakes when you were a Christian in order to be more “Christ like”?

for instance.. this is what I did

* threw out all my secular cds to trash or op shop

* threw out all my secular dvds to trash or op shop.. only a few sold on a buying site for minimal money...

*spent so much money (hundreds) on a collection of rare and common anime goods...mangas...stuff like that.. these wouldn’t sell so I dumped them in the trash. I couldn’t sell for remotely half of what I paid. Only a few items sold out of the lot. A lot went to op shops as well. Jewellery and even rare canvas posters I spent heaps on. I thought this series was “wicked”.

* hada favourite tv series from the 1980’s on a complete DVD disc set. I still loved the series but felt I had to remove this part of me. It went in the trash despite paying like $200 for it. I couldn’t sell it due to copyrighting. Still angry over this.

* buying trading cards of a nostalgic series I loved as a kid..including the pockets to put them in. Out they went as well to op shop. I thought it was “idolatry” considering it was human people

* buying a poster of a Japanese band I liked. Out that went. Idolatry.

* throwing out a card game to an op shop as the women had showing breasts... it was brand new I just bought it.

Thinking of the hundreds of dollars I spent to trash these goods because of “idolatry” angers me. I am not too bothered about the shows themselves as I no longer like the anime show or the band or the 80’s show. I feel that part of me was abolished when I threw that stuff out.

You know...I cannot thing of a single thing that I did, or did not do, (aside from wasting many a Sunday).

When presented with a decree from a fundy or pastor about something I should or should not do I researched before abstaining from anything - or doing anything for that matter. I searched for evidence, yay or nay, in the Bible. You know were THAT lead.

Ejected a VHS tape my nephew was watching and pounded it to pieces. Clan of the Cave Bear. I thought it was showing him things he shouldn't see.

Family didn't react well to that, but I was insistent that it was not right...

Other stupid stuff:

Had pictures of aborted fetuses in my car windows. Yep, I was one of those guys. Also blocked doors to clinics 2 or 3 times. Arrested once.

Did prayer-walks with groups of pastors about 4am some mornings. A "prophet" had told us to strike before the demonic activity grew when the heathens woke up... We bound demons and cursed porn shops, anointed things with olive oil mixed with frankincense (cause that's more stuff from the bible - wooooo!) none of which had any effect at all. We encountered a Vietnam vet on a bike one morning and he commented that we looked like a squad out on patrol. That juiced us up of course. In reality, we were idiots tricked into thinking we were accomplishing something magical with our belief and woo.

Bought and threw away rather a lot of porn. Endless cycle of trying not to be a human male with natural lust. Lots of other believers in the same boat, including pastors.

Omg, sorry I'm just laughing...you're such a sensible person on here that I'd have never thought it.

I was downright normal in comparison even though I was fundie....I admit even as a fundie, I thought the abortion clinic protestors were downright loonie...but then again, I harbored the wrong beliefs for a long time in the church, in regards to women's right to choose. And is it just me or is it disproportionately men out there, or so it seems, protesting and being so vocal about killing fetuses. Guess what guys....it takes two, and you're responsible as well, duh!

I honestly can't think of anything, I wasn't too focused on being "christ like" at all. My mom told me I had an utter trash collection of novels at one point, the implication being that they were sinful, and I just ignored her. I suppose my conscience just didn't operate as it should have or then I was just too good of a believer :P

Wow, fascinating stories!  (Un?)fortunately), I have nothing to share regarding the topic. I partook of many "unchristian" practices with nary a shred of guilt.

There was that time that I tried sacrificing myself, to myself, in order to appease my own need for bloody ritual. I almost got stuck in hell and couldn't get out. But I was able to push through, see some friends back topside, and then ascend up into the sky after a brief visit. Since then I've been working away on a big house in the sky which is some how full of many mansions? With big plans of returning to the earth again.

Oh I also was against playing non Christian video games and swore off Disney...threw out all my Disney stuff! Apart from one box to keep my Christian books in! The irony. I also wouldn’t download the wizard of oz match game as the film was wicked... same for pokemon I claimed was “wicked” due to stories and the violence in it. I still do think pokemon is appropriate to the creatures fighting but still downloaded the game as I’ll always have a place for pokemon...

I just wish I hung out with classmates and made more friends throughout highschool. I was a loner and was afraid to hang out with anyone because my thoughts might be "corrupted" by their secular ways. I didn't hang out with Christians either because inevitably they were "fake" christians and were probably destined to burn in an even hotter hell than the non-Christians. My childhood was very lonely and desolate, and I had a lot of catching up to do (and still do) later in life.

Had my hair long and chin-cactus right on longer than controllable length.

Had preacher talk me into cutting both off.  Ponytail was to bottom of my 501's rear pocket. About 20 inches and close to 19 pounds of hair. Cur hair off of face, that beard was about 10 or so inches with fringe of fluff close to two more.

Was politely not to ride my ancient noisy HD to church "as it was too LOUD".

None of that shit was "worth it" folks...  Not one single hair.   When I finally got bike out of garage, refueled and oiled her up,off she and I went.  Never looked back.

Hi Kev

Once you came to your senses, did you manage to get your hair back? Or was it all too late by then?

Sad to say that never had opportunity to let head hair to get longer.

Between the need by management to "look respectable" and safety reasoning in work by mid-30's combined with genetics

( ahhh-hemmm! ) not enough left on top to allow youthful mane.

Have kept chin cactus. Helps keep me from looking like a near 60 year old Charlie Brown, the Round Headed Kid.:)

I went ahead and bought and did stuff I thought was sinful,  then worried about going to hell.  Hoped I wouldn't die suddenly in a car wreck before I had time to pray for forgiveness.  LOL, that's the good thing about Christianity.  You can do all that bad stuff, then on your death bed, ask for forgiveness and step right into heaven!

Lucky you, you only had to pray. I had to ask others for forgiveness, that's the only way you got it because they had "the spirit". And of course, half the stuff you do, you really aren't going to approach another human being about, at least if you're me, it just felt so silly as an adult. Nevertheless, the whole thing is so idiotic and mind controlling, wondering if you're going to end up in hell if you don't wake up the next morning.

I was half joking when i said that about being able to pray before dying.  I never really bought into that, but my father did.  He was scared that he would die before he had time to ask forgiveness for something he had done wrong.  He was even scared that he might have done some wrong that he wasnt aware of.  He died a guilt ridden man, suddenly by a massive heart attack.

Not really a mistake, just more of an embarrassment. Several years back, some Christians had stuck bible passages on lampposts all over town. On one lamppost, someone else had covered the bible passage with a "God's not real" note, or something like that. I stood and scraped/peeled it off, even though people were looking at me. I thought I was being a good little Christian. In reality, I was just a good little moron making a fool of myself.

I remember throwing out my favorite VHS at 12 years old. Annie, the musical. Because Ms Hannigan was trying to be slutty with Oliver Warbucks.

By far,my greatest regrets are not allowing my kids to trick or treat (we all went for the first time this year and it was awesome) and interrupting/turning off the tv everytime my oldest child heard “millions of years ago.” And then drilling into her head it was a lie and God created the heavens and the earth. I am still paying for this and so is she.

Going on a missions trip and drsssing as a clown to hand out candy to impoverished kids and then sleeping in a hotel at night was pretty awful too.

You're describing how I operated.  This really fueled my OCD.  I was always working on little prayers "just in case" (and getting so I could say them very quickly in my head at that last moment thinking I could rattle one off in my last breath or something silly).

I hated xian music and couldn't imagine tossing my stuff.  My brother did this and I thought he was an idiot especially when he tried to convince me to do it too.  I had friends that did it.  They all regretted it later and wound up buying everything again (and maybe again and again).  Lame.

I did make the mistake of getting rid of a few friends because they weren't the right sort of xians.  That didn't last either.  Even while I was a fairly big believer my friends wound up being non-believers and a JW's.  All people I should have ditched.

The whole thing is about ditching shit you like and selling shit to people who don't want it and it's just too much.  I don't need that.  Meh.

Oof, this hit home with me. I never had things to throw out because I never let them into my life in the first place. Not secular material and certainly not friends. Now at 33 I am JUST NOW beginning to learn that “parties” aren’t evil.
