Goodbye Jesus

Masturbation and being raised Christian

I'm not able to post in the sex section so I wanted to post this. How did you ever come to terms with accepting masturbation being ex-Christian? I was raised to believe it was a mortal sin and it seems other churches have a kinder view towards it.

I never thought of it as selfish, it keeps me from getting someone pregnant or getting an STD. It's healthy to have sexual releases.

It’s safe sex.

It could get you in trouble if you do it in public or use illegal pornography.

If it keeps you from having a relationship that you would rather have, then that would be a problem.

Otherwise . . . .

“Studies have shown that 95% of men masturbate, and the other 5% are liars.”

I never saw a problem with it. It causes no harm (unless its an extreme case). I know there was that strange idea of sacred sperm, that wasting it was in some way wrong but once you realise the average climax releases 100 million sperm, its alot harder to think any 1 is special. Even if you only had sex for procreation, 99m sperm must die every time.

That was the same argument against contraception which equally makes no sense.

Christianity had me in fear of invisible demons and devil, invisible angels and God (and an assortment of wacky "living creatures"), fear of committing adultery just by lusting, and quoting endless bible verses like they were some kind of invisible "sword of the spirit". None of it was ever real, but the built-in shame and fear was part of my psyche for 30 years of belief. That isn't easily deprogrammed. But like most believers, none of that stopped me for those 30 years. It is a rare person that doesn't wank. Even dogs and kangaroos wank. It's normal. Sex is normal. Lust is normal. It is one of the primary drives of life, and that is why Christianity (and other religions) want to regulate it so much. If they can make you feel bad about being hungry, like hunger is some kind of sin or cooperation with the devil, then you'll always feel like you need them as a cure. Same with lust.

It's normal, and nobody's business but yours. As TEG noted, what you wank to can come back on you (see what I did there?) if it involves something illegal, but that's a very different issue.

Even guys that are married wank, as do women. Pastors wank. Some have sexless marriages, some have boring partners that they still love but who don't attract them, some are still dealing with religion at a deep level.

Some guys never learn to make themselves attractive sexually, somehow expecting a woman to suddenly fall in lust with them for no reason. We have to work at it as hard as they do, especially when overcoming old religious programming that taught us that god would provide and that lust was shameful instead of totally normal and part of nature's programming to make more life. Think of all the work that birds go through each spring doing complex dances and such to attract a mate. Humans are no different, and we each have to do what we can to become attractive if we want real sex. Lots of factors like physical appearance, mode of dressing, odor, teeth, vehicle, income, and being comfortable talking with others.

I always had a good time with my sexual fantasies. I am a paraphiliac (specifically, a "knocked-out superheroine" specialist), and what I want to do sexually can only be carried out on a fantasy level. So I always saw masturbation as a nice, legal, safe way to achieve my desires. Fun stuff!

Observe the manakin!

Coming out of a branch of Christianity that does confessions, I can tell you that very few of them confess to having this sort of private amusement. Confession lines were short, and when I talked about it very occasionally with people I trusted they confided in me that they were in some doubt about whether 'that one' needed to be confessed. I got a variety of reactions when I confessed to it. Some priests would advise me to fill my life better. Others would pass over the matter in silence and talk about something else. The occasional priest would as much as imply that there isn't a real expectation of perfection in that department and, I think, just not to overdo it. And the occasional priest would say that perfect continence is possible--which it probably is, actually. I think in a certain style of life, with a certain commitment, the sexual organs can just sleep indefinitely. I have this great book written by a former priest who explains that not only is this the 'most confessed' item among men but that seminarians and priests have a major difficulty living up to the professed standard.

P: I'm a sinner.

P2: I was made in God's image and likeness.

Therefore....

We maybe onto something here...  Imagine you are a horny teenager and you are given ultimate power to make a world.  You would make the inhabitants sex driven, give them orders to spread and multiply and have a live porn planet for your viewing pleasure!

Get bored of the two hotties you made?  Invent some different races for porn variety!  Maybe mix in a bit of incest porn and mature porn!

It all makes sense now!

He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.  Revelation 22:20

The first coming....the second coming....

What kind of 'coming' are we talking about here?

Ezekiel 23:20: "There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses." No way that happened without divine intervention...

Why was god so unhappy when Eve started wearing clothes? Why did He get bent out of shape when Onan refused incest porn? When they say Samson lost his powers cos they cut his hair do they mean he got a Brazilian?

If you don't masturbate, and don't have sex, the sperm will die eventually anyways. Why not have some fun?

Assuming a male perspective,  that is. From a female perspective,  what's the downside?

Either way, masturbation is basically just harmless fun. Have at er.

One is hard-pressed to find a religious tradition that recommends masturbation. Some traditions are against it outright, while others will not comment directly but suggest that one ought to be cautious about observing the attractiveness of people other than one's own spouse. What these traditions have in common is the idea that the self-pleasuring habit can contribute to a solipsistic state of mind from which it is more difficult to develop one's talents and relationships. It may be an example of how religions can express a true idea even if we don't want the entire philosophy or worldview.

Religion is pretty much against anything that is pleasurable. Priest are apparently excluded though.:D If religion can convince their adherents to deny themselves pleasure, then they know they own you and can make you do just about anything they want.
