What This Atheist Learned from the Cain and Abel Myth

Recommended Posts

An interesting interpretation of the myth, considering how vacuous the myth is in the first place.

The last half of the chapter (Genesis 4) is interesting, and doesn’t get much attention.  Cain, driven from the lord’s presence, becomes something like the founder of civilization.  The gnostic interpretation would be that the lord/demiurge keeps people ignorant and we have to break free of him to progress.  But it could also mean that civilization is a bad thing; that is a theme in the book of enoch.

This was lectured about by Joseph Campbell a lot. That was my first exposure. Makes the most sense.
