Timothew
Well. Easter. The wife is going to church, hoping to not have to explain why I'm not there. I'm hoping to be left alone. Maybe I'll go get some white eggs (all of mine are brown) and color them. Fun times!
Seekingwhatisnext
I’m going to go to church. My husband and mom and In laws have started going to a new church. I don’t usually go, but I went for Christmas Eve and I’ll go again for Easter. I actually enjoy church, the singing and social aspect. I have absolutely no belief at all and I think that’s what makes me ok with church. If I was still in doubt about god then it would be difficult, but being a firm atheist, I separate religious belief from church attendance. Heck I still listen to hymns in my car sometimes. I enjoys parts of “religion” while having absolutely no belief in anything. A friend recently mentioned karma, I don’t even belief in that, if there is no supernatural then there is NO supernatural, everything is random chance. But still I do enjoy standing in the pew singing how great thou art guess it’s nostalgia from my childhood. I’ll also be celebrating Easter with quite a bit of Cadbury chocolates!

Easter was always my favorite religious holiday. As a nonbeliever, as they say, I'd like to find an alternative way to celebrate. I was thinking of following some of the older pagan traditions. I'm not interested in goddess worship (still an atheist). Any ideas? What are some of your ex-Christian traditions? As a youngster I remember one of the few times my dad would go to church was on Easter Sunday. He would give a generous donation to the church in the offering plate on Easter, but he went to church seldom, and made little donations otherwise, maybe on Christmas. We would have a family get-together for an Easter evening dinner. My dad's famous grace prayer on Easter was, "good bread good meat, good god let's eat," so he was seldom asked to say grace. That was many years ago now. But my sisters and I usually get together on Easter to this day, even though they know I don't believe. Last year and this year we had no Eater dinner get-together because of COVID, but I like to go to such family gatherings when they usually have them. My parents are now dead, but my mother was quite religious as well as my sisters. I have never been against religion or religious people. As an adult I've always thought of religion as a type of foolishness like most think of those who used to believe in Zeus, the Roman and Greed Gods, the god of thunder, etc. I think all religions of the world are obviously jokes, so when people talk of religion seriously to me, I guess I secretly laugh inside, but try not to smile. I often think of sarcasm when I hear religious talk but never would be so cruel to use it with religious people, except maybe with those acting overly arrogant concerning their preaching to me. But as an atheist I enjoy sarcasm here in the X Ch forum. An example of this would be that today is GOOD FRIDAY, the greatest day when Jesus was executed (although I am certain that Jesus and God of the bible never really existed). So I much prefer good Friday to Eater Sunday, the obviously fabled day and story of the rising of Jesus from the dead. So my celebration will be today, in memory of Jesus' execution For this I will have a few shots of whiskey and cheers with my grown children, and likely go to eat lunch outside by myself, having a beer or two and salad, ask for cranberry sauce, at a local restaurant. Maybe I can make the celebration of GOOD FRIDAY my way, a joyous family tradition with my children. SO cheers to you AcrobatDetective, and to all those reading this posting, and lurkers, on this GOOD FRIDAY Sorry I messed missed / forgot finger palm Sunday and Ass Ash Wednesday in the Catholic tradition.

Yeah seekingwhatisnext, I too enjoy singing religious songs like "how great though art" and rock of ages," etc. in a church pew or at a home-study get-together. One of my favorite stories concerning religious home study relates to aggressive married women who ask me what I believe. I expect they have an inkling that I don't believe so they ask. I tell them that I do not like to discuss my beliefs in a group but that I will tell them in private if they wish. That ends it right there. Not only are they afraid to talk to me in private, but the word gets around and no one thereafter asks me what I believe So I keep getting invited and going since I like to sing with the people who go and who I meet there. And the BIG JOKE of religious belief sometimes makes me smile.

A friend recently mentioned karma, I don’t even belief in that, if there is no supernatural then there is NO supernatural, everything is random chance. Lack of some elements of determinism - i.e. Bible deities - does not equal random chance. I more include to think that hard determinism in true, than randomness. The thing is, from our perspective, even if things are deterministic, they still often look and feel random, because we do not know all the variables. Objective determinism often lives side by side with subjective randomness. And modern science would be impossible to do without methodical determinism - you have to assume cause and effect to study anything. You cannot have any drug trial if you think the drug effects are just random. So, just because God does not control everything, doesn't mean everything is not being controlled. Idk about Easter. I do find some parts of the story interesting. Transformation through suffering for example. That refusing to compromise on some issues ultimately makes you a better person. From a strictly naturalistic perspective, I can just celebrate spring. It is the time of renewal and new life blooming. At least where I live. It is a work in progress now, I have no real fiexed or even consistent view on things now.

Timothew
I buried some daffodil bulbs last fall. They are just now coming up. That's kind of nice to see.
Super Moderator florduh Posted April 3, 2021 Super Moderator Share Posted April 3, 2021 Our friends just got back from their other home in NY where they've been hunkered down for Covid this past year. Our group here along with them are all vaccinated and it's as safe as it will ever be. It's really a rebirth of socializing for us all. We're doing a Chinese Easter. Local restaurant will be open and ready to supply us with all the various Chinese dishes we love. I'm thinking veggie egg foo young, Hunan chicken, egg roll, Kung Pao chicken or beef, white rice, fried rice, some noodle dishes, and we have a home made strawberry cake for dessert. Chop sticks freshly washed and ready to go (forks for the cake). If we don't get sick from Covid we'll likely get sick from over eating. Happy Easter! Oh yeah, there's not a "believer" among us!!!
