The South African government was too slow in getting enough of its population vaccinated.  Which seems to have given the Covid virus a chance to mutate again, this time into a more transmissible (and possibly more virulent) variant.

 

The original strain didn't take long to spread from Wuhan in China to become a global pandemic and it seems that this new variant is already spreading in the same way.  Today the UK closed its borders to six African countries, but that may be too little and too late.  A case of the new variant has already been identified in Belgium, so its already in Europe and is probably spreading, even as you read this.

 

And once again, scientists are having to play catch up and are racing to try and identify how the virus has changed and what they can do to limit the damage.
