walterpthefirst
https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-60662541 Scientists have found and filmed one of the greatest ever undiscovered shipwrecks 107 years after it sank. The Endurance, the lost vessel of Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, was found at the weekend at the bottom of the Weddell Sea. The ship was crushed by sea-ice and sank in 1915, forcing Shackleton and his men to make an astonishing escape on foot and in small boats. Video of the remains show Endurance to be in remarkable condition. Even though it has been sitting in 3km (10,000ft) of water for over a century, it looks just like it did on the November day it went down. Its timbers, although disrupted, are still very much together, and the name - Endurance - is clearly visible on the stern. "Without any exaggeration this is the finest wooden shipwreck I have ever seen - by far," said marine archaeologist Mensun Bound, who is on the discovery expedition and has now fulfilled a dream ambition in his near 50-year career. "It is upright, well proud of the seabed, intact, and in a brilliant state of preservation," he told BBC News.
☆ pantheory ☆
I guess freezing waters for more than a century is a very good preservative of wood as well as other bio-materials. 100,00o ft., almost two miles deep, seems amazing to me for such a location search and photographic quest. It would seem that the general location of its longitude and latitude must have been fairly well known. It might be noted that 1915 was in the middle of World War I when most large ships were no longer wooden or sailing vessels.
Super Moderator TheRedneckProfessor Posted March 9, 2022 Super Moderator Share Posted March 9, 2022 If my last name was Bound, I'd come up with a better name for my kid than Mensun. Homeward, Honor, Glory... so many missed opportunities. 1

Not to be anal; but if it was Hole, I'd name him Doug. Middle name Allen. Doug A. Hole.

walterpthefirst
Ok, if it's ridiculous/stupid/pathetic-sounding names of real people that you want, try these. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gonville_Bromhead https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augustus_Toplady https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dale_Frail Or if you want to go fictional. https://britishcomics.fandom.com/wiki/Aaron_A._Aardvark https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLBW8L198GQ The starlet Cupid Stunt, aka Kenny Everett. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Pugwash This last one has become something of an urban legend over here, with the conspiracy theory that certain members of the Captain's crew originally had rude names. Such as... Seaman Staines, Master Bates and Roger the Cabin Boy.
