Is that title really accurate?  Atheists hiding their "beliefs"?

Well I certainly fit that statistic (female, former southener, agnostic atheist,  and pretty much hiding it), registered republican but no longer identify with that party.

A belief that there is no god? Would that be accurate?

I think you could say "the status of their beliefs"

I didn't read the article, but If you live in some parts of the country and want any friends, or want family to do more than tolerate you, you keep your non-beliefs quiet.  Or in a small town it might even keep you from getting certain jobs.

In my opinion, it would be slightly less inaccurate.  But I don't want to derail the thread with an argument over whether atheism is a lack of belief or a belief in no god.

I think a number of us are Southern, and this is certainly my own experience on 2/3 of the fronts.

Now is the time to pass laws that make it illegal to not talk about god or to practice unbelief especially if it makes someone else feel uncomfortable.

Florida or Texas would probably run with this one.
