Goodbye Jesus

Living With Bipolar Religious Parent

I'm from a family full of mental health/personality disorders. It's very difficult to get someone committed to a mental hospital--my brother and I looked into it for our sister. (Consider how many crazies are homeless and on the street instead of in a hospital.) Psychiatry being a soft science, yes, some people can talk their way out of care. And it's extremely difficult to help someone even in the best circumstances because people want help on their own terms--but their own terms are what got them into trouble.

I recently stopped managing my mother's money because she keeps flip-flopping about what she's doing--changing accounts, powers of attorney, and last weekend echoed a relative who accused me of mismanagement. I was even investigated by the county where I live--of course, they found no evidence of mismanagement. I finally said enough--I'm not getting into legal trouble. And I'm tired of being bitched at.

Point being, it's OK to jump out of the car before your mother drives it over the cliff.

I like this guy's take on dealing with the mentally ill: basically, leave it to professionals.

You might also enjoy the TV show Titus. It's an autobiographical dark comedy about Titus's alcoholic father and brilliant but mentally ill mother. What would you do if you were Titus?
